Did you know February is Black History Month? Personally some of the most amazing women in my life are from the Black Community and have been blessed to call them sisters, priviledged to be mentored by them and hear some extraordinary stories that brought us closer! Acknowledging Black History Month personally is a meaningful way to show respect for the contributions and struggles of Black individuals throughout history. Here are some suggestions on how you can do this: 1. Educate Yourself: Read books, articles, and watch documentaries that explore Black history, culture, and achievements. Gain a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences within the Black community. 2. Attend Events: Attend local events or virtual gatherings that celebrate Black History Month. This could include lectures, panel discussions, art exhibits, or performances. Participate actively and engage in discussions to broaden your perspective. 3. Engage in Conversations: Initiate and participate in conversations about racial equality, social justice, and diversity. Be open to learning from others and sharing your own insights. Constructive dialogue can contribute to a better understanding of historical and contemporary issues. Remember, the key is to approach these activities with respect, empathy, and a genuine desire to learn and understand. Creating a space for open dialogue and shared experiences can strengthen your friendships and contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate community. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymonth2024 #laragrafu #acknowledgement

As Black History Month draws to a close under the theme "Saluting Our Sisters," I'm left unsettled. This theme aimed to honour overlooked black women - yet, as Lee Chambers noted, something felt lifeless this year. My doctoral research uplifts black women's voices, so the irony isn't lost on me. Do we really need just one month to celebrate these stories? As Chambers wrote, has this year felt flat because we're saluting black women? It's disheartening that our recognition is confined to a month. Our contributions deserve year-round appreciation, not tokenisation. This Black History Month felt performative, with little allied energy towards lasting change from institutions. Platitudes won't suffice. We must do more to amplify black women daily, not just when it grabs headlines. Our ideas and voices require consistent support. My work will persist beyond October/February, advocating for black women and equity. But our stories warrant integration into history itself, not just during #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory #AmplifyBlackWomen #RecognitionEveryDay #saluteoursisters

Black History Month in the UK is a significant occasion that calls for both celebration and education about the rich history and vibrant culture of the Black community. Throughout the entire month of October, a diverse array of events takes place across the country, honouring the African and Caribbean cultures and histories. These events encompass a wide range of activities, from delightful food festivals to captivating music workshops, enlightening educational seminars, and thought-provoking lectures. This year, the theme for Black History Month is 'Saluting our Sisters'. It is of utmost importance to recognise and pay tribute to the countless Black women throughout the UK who have not only achieved remarkable feats but have also paved the way for others and advocated for their fellow sisters and communities. Keep an eye on my socials for my posts celebrating BAME Women in STEM. Incorporating the celebration of Black History Month into the workplace is a crucial endeavour that requires effective planning and collaboration. Inclusive Employers, a reputable organisation, has generously shared a comprehensive guide on Black History Month, offering a plethora of valuable resources that can be utilised to enhance the experience. By embracing the spirit of Black History Month, we demonstrate our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and understanding. Let us seize this opportunity to honour the contributions of Black individuals, celebrate their achievements, and deepen our knowledge of their remarkable history and culture. Together, we can create an environment that fosters appreciation, respect, and unity. #diversity #equity #inclusion #belonging #BlackHistoryMonth #SalutingOurSisters #WeMatter #STEM

How is your organisation marking this Black History Month? This year, the theme is Celebrating Our Sisters. While this should by no means be confined to one month of the year, this October allows organisations and individuals to unite under a common theme to celebrate and amplify the contributions of Black women throughout history. Not only that, but Black History Month also provides a unique opportunity for organisations to consider the present and future - the current challenges faced by Black women in the workplace - and ways in which these can be overcome. If you would like to use this opportunity in your organisation, Norma Molla, a Psychologist here at Pearn Kandola, has some limited availability in October to deliver a speech for Black History Month. Norma's engaging and compelling speech addresses this year's theme with an intersectional lens, shining a light on the importance and benefits of sisterhood, both historically and within the modern workplace. Exploring the context of Black History Month and touching on our widely publicised Racism at Work (2021) report, which she co-authored with Binna Kandola OBE, Norma's speech also explores: - How Black women have been affected historically by discrimination - How to inspire future generations of Black women - How to get a seat at the table With less than two weeks to go, Norma's availability is now extremely limited, so if you are interested in learning more, please email info@pearnkandola.com #blackhistorymonth2023 #sisterhood #BHM #DEI #workplaceculture

Reading Feli S.s inspirational post has inspired me to be braver. I sometimes tiptoe around posting on topics of Racism, Religion or anything that has been a different experience to what I have had or lived. I worry my lack of understanding would come across as ignorant or rude and my words would have an opposite effect, to what I am intending. So, I am being brave and sharing this because I bet, I am not the only one with this worry and by keeping silent I am not presenting myself as an allie to the Black Community or being the force for change within my area of influence. During my attendance at our Multicultural Leadership Development Programme launch I had the opportunity to be apart of workshops, discussions and hear stories about the daily barriers that my colleagues have experienced within their life and career and I am proud to work for a company who recognises our Black colleagues need equity and not equality. Equity acknowledges that different people need different things to THRIVE in the workplace. Equity is about fairness; it's about taking the time to understand the needs of your Black friends, colleagues, and leaders and supporting them with what they need to thrive and develop in society. The fact I was still unsure what to post and whether I should post today, has highlighted my personal need for knowledge. If you have felt the same, then I urge you to use this month to make a change. It begins with education- taking the time to learn about the history, culture and challenges faced by the Black community, reading books, blogs, listening to podcasts, we can’t always put the onus on Black people to educate us. The more uncomfortable something feels, the more it means we have to lean in and learn. Get comfortable with the uncomfortable. I am committing this #BlackHistoryMonth to seek out the knowledge I am lacking and I will continue to education myself beyond October as #BlackHistoryMonth is not just one moment in time but an ongoing fight against Racism. #BlackHistoryMonth #EmbraceDifference #Inclusion #AmeyEmbraceDifference #MakeAnImpact #BeBold
During #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm frequently asked to share my personal story and discuss any challenges I've encountered as a person of Black Caribbean heritage. In the past, my response was often a polite decline. Frankly, I felt unprepared to participate, as I embarrassingly lacked a deep understanding of my own heritage and, as a Black woman, I couldn't recall facing significant challenges solely based on the colour of my skin. However, in the past few years, I've taken it upon myself to engage with multicultural affinity groups, attend webinars, and immerse myself in articles, books and films to educate myself about Black history, its impact on Black communities and, most importantly, how to educate, embrace and enhance our community, especially within a workplace. This journey has led me to taking on a role as Co-Chairwoman, where I work alongside Neetu Khosla - Chairwoman for the Amey Multicultural Committee, to provide continuous support in uniting our workplace community and foster a positive culture that makes our differences inclusive. My experience is testament that anyone can begin their Black History Month journey today, regardless of their skin colour or prior knowledge, and this holds true even if you are a person of black heritage. So, let's all make a commitment to educate ourselves and actively contribute to positive change. Together, we can create a more inclusive and understanding world. #BlackHistoryMonth #EmbraceDifference #Inclusion #AmeyEmbracingDifference #MakeAnImpact #BeBold Neetu Scean Karen Jodi Reanne Louise

Happy Black History Month! In February, we celebrate the achievements that Black People have accomplished, going beyond the history of racism and oppression. Why is it important to celebrate Black History Month? 1️⃣ It offers the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many contributions and achievements of Black individuals throughout our history. 2️⃣ It educates people about the marginalized aspects of history, such as the struggles and triumphs of Black communities. It raises awareness about the experiences of Black people, their resilience in the face of adversity, and their significant role in shaping societies around the world. 3️⃣ It promotes diversity and inclusion, encouraging dialogue and understanding among people of different backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive society where everyone's contributions are valued and respected. 4️⃣ It serves as a source of inspiration and empowerment, particularly for young Black individuals and helps to instill a sense of identity, while also motivating future generations to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on the world. 5️⃣ It goes beyond the textbooks, giving people the opportunity to learn about lesser-known historical figures that have impacted our lives and world. It paints a much richer picture of history. 6️⃣ It reminds us of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice. It honors the legacy of those who have fought against racism, discrimination, and oppression, while also encouraging continued efforts to address systemic issues and create a more equitable society for all. #blackhistorymonth #BHM #Equality #february #CelebratingBlackHistory
