The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has proposed new regulations to prevent heat injury and illness in both indoor and outdoor work settings. Clubs will be required to create and implement a heat hazard evaluation and control plan specific to their locations, monitor heat conditions, develop heat emergency response plans, conduct annual training, and maintain records of indoor monitoring data. The proposed rule establishes heat index triggers at 80 and 90 degrees, each with specific employee accommodations and control measures. On February 5, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published the proposed new Emergency Response Standard, and the public has until June 21 to provide comments. If adopted as is, this proposed standard would bring immense challenges to volunteer departments, and some may even be forced to shut down. It is important that the volunteer fire and emergency service understand how this rule would impact them and provide their comments to OSHA before June 21.

Ontario companies now face significantly higher fines—up to $2 million—for Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) violations. These increased penalties make it all the more important to make sure that your workplace has a functioning occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). An effective system includes policies, processes, and procedures that maximize workers’ safety while they’re on the job. It also ensures that all positive health and safety measures are documented, which can help to prove due diligence if an incident ever does occur at your workplace. Learn more about the new OHSA penalties and how to keep workers safe by improving your OHSMS: https://ow.ly/lRAS50QkLyR

Attention Employers! Are you aware of the Occupational Safety & Health Act 94 (OSHA94) / 2022 amendment, Section 29A? This requires all employers with five or more employees to appoint an OSH Coordinator to ensure safety at the workplace. Non-compliance can lead to a hefty fine of up to RM50,000.00. If your business unit does not comply with this legal requirement, appoint an OSH coordinator from the existing site operations focal to avoid any penalties. As a certified OSH-C, I can attest to the importance of OSH coordinators in maintaining a safe work environment.
