How do you gain credibility as a consultant ? My preferred way to work is to integrate with the team and company I work for, and adopt the mindset of "being part of the team", even though I am an external...👤 To do that requires credibility🔒 (and trust, but I see them as interchangeable in this context) I see the following as key to this: - "Speak the language" 🗣 You got to ensure a common understanding, and this is best done by having a baseline level of understanding of the field you are in (cybersecurity for example) - Technical expertise is a plus 🔬 This is not a pre-requisite though. I don't have a technical background, but due to curiosity (and working with great people) I slowly built up that expertise as a result of getting my hands dirty on a weekly basis More to come, I don't want to make the post too long.

I was visiting a client the other day when the IT director was asked to help fix a sprinkler head. A humorous reminder of a not-so-funny reality a lot of IT professionals often face. I get it, IT is the fix-it person for your technology, but often they can get stuck with the "fix-it" jobs that don't fit the job description, and are distractions from bigger strategy. Almost every IT leader I know is swamped. Overworked and struggling with limited resources. Strategy is always having to take a back seat to the day-to-day fires. It can be overwhelming to constantly try and tackle the endless to-do list of IT issues, connectivity problems, and cyber security risks, all while trying to manage the influx of tickets. In reality, the biggest benefit of your role is being a thought leader and implementing new strategies and IT advancements. But with the constant interruptions, I find most can't get to that part of their job. Here's what I would do differently: -Delegate: your time is valuable and offloading routine tasks can be a game changer. Your freed-up time will allow for bigger projects and strategic initiatives. -Integration of tools: your tools could be causing complexity. Look at the tools you have in place, and make sure there isn't overlap causing issues. - Risk management: review your cybersecurity and outsource where you can. In-house management should be paired with cyber expertise that allows you to do more for less. -Create your network: don't think you have to do it all. You'll get so much farther with a team of experts surrounding you to allow you to get to the bigger tasks. Engage with other IT leaders, and find co-managed resources to support your infrastructure. It will allow you to do your job better and more efficiently. ___ One of the most overlooked areas in IT management is resource allocation. IT leaders are often seen as the "fix-it" member of the team. But if you want bigger strategies and problems resolved, your leaders need support on the day-to-day items.
