I am blessed beyond measure to be able to do this "work". that does not feel like work...most of the time;) I spend my days with people who are passionate, self-aware, humble and who are all, in one way or another, trying their best to leave their organizations and those on their teams in better positions than when they arrived. We employ any number of tools, frameworks, and assessments to provide us with a great likelihood because all that matters is what works...not what we want or our opinions. I heard this great leadership comment the other day – I’m honest because I’m invested. I think about my Hall of Fame boss, Janice Payton, who was the queen at both. Having honest and direct conversations with our teams is part of being a leader. Sometimes you’re lucky enough to have a team member like Julie Greene, CVA who respectfully and smartly push back on you and help guide you to the best decision for the group. Let’s all be a little more honest and invested. #leadHrship.

Be nurturing towards yourself, not egocentric, but nurturing. Then you can truly address the needs of your family, colleagues, and teammates. My company has great new faces joining our senior leadership team. As I reflected on how to summarize my past experiences with the company, so I can share them with my new VP, I wrote this. "Going through so many leadership transitions is interesting because the battles you fought at their direction are over and all that is left are the scars. The new leadership didn't see the sacrifice, just the injured person left behind." Do you agree or disagree? Do you discuss the scars with new leadership or simply try for a blank slate and a fresh start? Is it better to be transparent or to CYA? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences.

You must unlearn what you have learned.

Within your circle of competence, you operate with an advantage. As you approach the perimeter (the limitations of your knowledge), your advantage starts to reduce. As you cross the perimeter, not only does your advantage vanish, but it transfers to other people. Suddenly, you find yourself playing in an area where others have an edge. And I beleive when we are taking new leadership positions or grow in career , many a time we getting to the edge of our circle of competences and from there try to grow the circle it self. The balance is that you know the edges and dont step too far out of this edge, where you have zero advantage ( atleast at present )
