Carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere is essential. Natural means of doing it are the most cost-effective and ought to be scaled up fast. Natural CDR can help capture over 50Gt CO2 per year. With 2,6 Teratons of excess CO2 in the atmosphere, even in a net zero state, it would take over 50 years to get the carbon dioxide levels back to pre-industrial levels. https://lnkd.in/dxRknx6D

Our failure to act swiftly on reducing emissions means we will have to rely more on carbon dioxide removals (CDR) to prevent catastrophic #climatechange. Read our overview on the different types of CDR, their current state of play in the market and how policy can play a crucial role in scaling these innovations: https://lnkd.in/dWV2P3sh

Today, the US Federal departments and offices have issued the statement and associated principles on voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) which is based on the belief the meaningful role #VCMs can and should play in facilitating GHG emissions reductions and removals, and eventually acting as a critical tool in the climate action toolkit to limit the global warming to 1.5 °C. The statement further reinforces that with right incentives and guardrails in place, VCMs holds potential to become a significant channel for mobilizing much needed private capital in support of the energy transition. Such developments paves the way for high-functioning VCMs that creates meaningful economic opportunities for carbon project investors, and connect buyers to high-quality, cost-effective emissions reductions and removals credits, ensuring that one credit truly represents one tonne of carbon dioxide (or its equivalent) reduced or removed from the atmosphere, beyond what would have otherwise occurred. https://lnkd.in/dbeb7wqV Quotes from the article: The global market for carbon dioxide (CO2) removal credits could reach up to $100 billion a year between 2030 and 2035 from $2.7 billion last year if barriers to its growth are addressed, a report by management consultancy Oliver Wyman said on Thursday. Demand for credits has begun to increase from sectors as diverse as technology and finance, chemicals and aviation but it’s not yet large enough to drive the scale of projects that experts say are needed, the report by Oliver Wyman, the City of London Corporation and the UK Carbon Markets Forum said. Barriers to growing the market include a lack of universally agreed standards on CO2 removal credits and a lack of guidance on how removals can be used to help meet climate targets. #carboncredits #carbontrading #carbonoffsets #carbonmarkets #bigcarbon #co2removal #carboncapture #climatechange #globalwarming #climateaction #corporateclimatepledges #corporateclimateclaims #greenwashing #misleadingclaims #carbonfootprint #carbonneutrality #netzeroco2 #netzeroemissions #parisclimateagreement
