🌍For all those interested in climate action and the path to #netzero, I can't recommend highly enough Nat Bullard's (hopefully) annual slide deck on all things #decarbonization. It is a 200-slide treasure trove of data and insights on various factors of the climate fight, from emissions trends to battery prices to capital flows. You can find the link to the full slide deck at the end of this post, but see below several findings that I found particularly insightful. 📊 Slide 26: Global per capita emissions of all greenhouse gases (#ghgs) peaked in 1973, just before the first oil shock. This finding is important not only because it shows meaningful improvement in #emissions intensity over the years, but also because it reflects the impact of dedicated government action, as advanced economies like the US sought to improve energy #efficiency in the wake of the first oil shock. However, there are two important caveats to this point: (1) the 1973 peak is for all GHGs, the peak in CO2 specifically occurred much later, and (2) this is a per capita peak, so absolute emissions levels are still rising as global population grows. 🔋 Slide 64: From 2019 to 2023, the market share of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) EV batteries soared from 5% to 42%, largely at the expense of Lithium Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries. This finding is particularly important for #indonesia as the country is expanding its #nickel processing industry in part to produce NMC batteries. However, the fast growth of LFP batteries (which don't contain any Nickel) indicates that the growth in nickel demand for EV batteries that Indonesia is betting on may not be as large as some expect (see material from Putra Adhiguna of the Energy Shift Institute for great coverage of Indonesia's nickel processing ambitions). 🔋 Slide 63: All top 10 #battery cell manufacturers (ranked by capacity produced) hail from China, South Korea, and Japan, collectively holding a staggering 93% market share of global battery production. 💧 Slide 102: Hydropower has witnessed notable decreases in capacity factor (i.e. actual power output as a percent of maximum theoretical power output) over recent years. For instance, Brazil's #hydropower capacity factor dropped from nearly 60% around 2010 to below 40% in 2021. #vietnam has seen similar challenges, as the country's summer 2023 blackouts have been partially attributed to unexpectedly low output from hydropower facilities. 🔔 Today at 3.30pm East Africa Time: Kim Geheb talks about finding common ground on 'wicked problems'. Please join us online at #AfricaClimateWeek for a TEDx style talk on the need for #integration across our institutions, drawing from key examples from our programme (10 African countries). Kim frames #wickedproblems as inherently complex social-ecological endeavours which fundamentally recognize that #humanaction shapes the #environment and that the environment, in turn, provides the biophysical basis for #humanwellbeing. In response to human-induced ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change, it is timely to reflect on which combination of social and ecological system properties can best facilitate sustainable land management and mediate the inevitable conflicts across landscapes. This Action Hub talk, titled ‘Common Ground’ – will focus on how people navigate the complexity and unpredictable change forced by climate change, by focusing on key leverage points which foster polycentric governance, and those that make landscape management more effective, equitable, and resilient. By drawing from a diverse evidence base, the talk will highlight six fundamental ingredients which should encompass an integrated approach to land management and should enable institutions to be “fit for purpose”. The session will conclude with an opportunity for self-reflection from the audience on their own relative “fit for purpose” and discuss key skill sets and traits required to tackle the impacts of the climate crises. #CIFOR_ICRAF #ourlandscapes #complexity #climatechange #climateaaction #governance #landscapemanagement #ILM #IntegratedLandscapeManagement #ILA #IntegratedLandscapeApproach Khalil Walji Dominique le Roux Mieke Bourne Niclas Gottmann George Schoneveld Peter Cronkleton Delia Catacutan Natalia Cisneros Raphael Tsanga, PhD Valentina Robiglio Divine Foundjem Tita Freidah Wanda, PMP ® Join the session via Teams:

The newest special interest group of SASA, Foresting Interest Group, with Caston Sigauke and Daniel Maposa (PhD, Pr.Sci.Nat.), invites you to their first seminar as follows: Date: 18 July 2024 Time: 15:00 (South African Time) Venue: Online (https://lnkd.in/dCBvu2y4) Title: Modelling climate data in Africa Presenter: Professor Saralees Nadarajah Affiliation: School of Mathematics, University of Manchester Abstract This presentation discusses modelling climate data across Africa, a region known for its diversity in terms of climate and fast change in environmental conditions. We will concentrate on the challenges and opportunities this large geographical landscape that the continent bequeaths us with. We will go down to methodological approaches of collecting, analysing, and interpreting climate data while showing the importance of localised models for accurate predictions. Case studies will be presented to illustrate these models’ application in addressing climate issues: drought, floods, and food security. The participants will be taken through the present technological advances for climate modelling and its implications for sustainable development in Africa.
