"Migration can be a collective act of hope: towards liberation from autocratic suppression or the shackles of poverty, freedom from fear. In the context of climate change, migration can be a means to ensure survival, prevent losses and damage and adapt to shifting climatic zones." I am happy to share with you my latest publication in the edited volume "Climate.Changes.Security. Navigating Climate Change and Security Challenges in the OSCE Region". This timely book is freely available and published by the Landesverteidigungsakademie of Austria. Climate Change is a Security Threat 16 years ago, the United Nations published an article titled "The Greatest Threat To Global Security: Climate Change Is Not Merely An Environmental Problem". And since then, we have seen greater numbers of increasingly severe climate related #disasters that have put increased pressure on limited resources and access to these resources, contributed to increased migrations of people and increased number of conflicts. #humanitariancrisis Last month, at a #unsc meeting, speakers stressed in an open debate that the #climatecrisis is generating growing threats to global peace, with John Kerry (1st United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate) noting that it is indisputable that the climate crisis is one of the top #securitythreats to the entire planet and life on the planet itself. And analysts of global trends predict that this will only worsen in the coming decades. Therefore, it is important for those of us in the security sector to recognize that the climate crisis is creating security crises, and we should be factoring #climatechange into our assessments and analysis, #riskmanagement strategies, and daily operations. #environmentalawareness #securitymanagement #securityawareness
