This weekend was all about basketball for me! Being a coach is a truly rewarding experience, and it was even more fulfilling to mentor others to coach. The weekend was full of successes 🙌 🏅🏀 First up with my Junior U10C Girls finishing top of the ladder (no finals at this age group). Well done to my junior Coach Josie, it has been a pleasure assisting you in your coaching journey. 🏅🏀 Secondly, mentoring my daughter Brooke Ware and her U14F side to take out the Grand Final, after a rough first season of being beat every week, to Season 2 winning the Grand Final. A perfect example of persistence, hard work, resilience & determination. #incredibleproud 🏅🏀 Thirdly, coaching a team of young people who participated in assisting the Special Olympics Ballarat Basketball team with some game practice in preparation for future tournaments & games. If you’re looking to recruit, I highly encourage you to chat to your local sports teams & let them know! Sports provide young people with opportunities to develop and refine skills that will be beneficial to them in all aspects of life, both now and in the future. ### Teaching Your Kids Resilience: Compete, Don't Change the Rules 💯 In sports, and in life, it's all about learning to crush it within the existing rules, not changing them to make things easier. Take Caitlin Clark, for example. She's an amazing basketball player, but she's having a tough rookie season. Some experts are suggesting that the WNBA should "change the rules" to help her out. Instead of moving the goalposts, let’s teach resilience and perseverance. Caitlin's journey shows how important it is to adapt, improve, and compete within the framework we have. 🌟 Reflecting on Resilience: My High School Football Journey 🌟 As I delve into my past experiences, I’m reminded of my freshman year in high school when I joined the football team. Tasked with playing both offensive and defensive lineman roles, I was immediately thrust into a challenging environment. Our team faced a shortage of players, which meant I didn’t get the chance to ease into the sport on the JV team; instead, I faced off against the strongest and most formidable juniors and seniors every day at practice. Despite the countless defeats in practice reps, where I was clearly mismatched in strength and experience, the toughest part was not the physical challenge—it was maintaining my confidence amid constant criticism from teammates. I still vividly remember being body slammed by an older player, a moment that symbolized the intense physical and emotional trials of that period. Looking back, those grueling days were pivotal. Each setback on the field was a lesson in perseverance. The relentless challenges didn’t just make me a better player; they forged my resilience and shaped me into who I am today. This journey taught me an invaluable lesson: perseverance is not just about enduring; it’s about emerging stronger. Insight for today…. Back in 2006, twelve young men from Beaverton Oregon played together on a baseball team that went to the Little League World Series….the pinnacle of youth baseball. The mantra of this team was Dream... Believe... Achieve... I do not recall which parent came up with this motto, but it was a stroke of brilliance. We had this slogan on everything related to the team. The players, coaches and parents lived it in the majority of moments. There may have been something to this way of thinking, believing and acting, as the team made it to the US Finals. (Ultimately, the team tied for 3rd in the world) Pretty impressive for a group of kids from Beaverton Oregon. The glue that made it all work was every player had a role to play, and they believed in themselves, their coaches and the team parents. It was a cohesive effort focused on one outcome….the dream of winning the LLWS. Look what was accomplished with some applied belief.
