What could our society look like if racial disparities in health outcomes didn’t exist? For children, racism affects their health in numerous and complicated ways. Children targeted by racism have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and behaviour problems. Therefore, policies must intentionally dismantle systemic racism to foster an inclusive and thriving society for all racially and ethnically minoritised children. Join Esther Lau, Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, and Series authors for the global launch of our new Series on racism and child health in the USA. They will discuss how racial and ethnic inequities affect the quality of paediatric care in the USA, before proposing policy solutions to eliminate child health disparities. Last April, the Australian Child Maltreatment Study team published the primary outcomes of their study - the first Australian study of its kind. The study aimed to identify how many Australians in the general population experienced any of the five types of child abuse and neglect. The Australian Childhood Maltreatment Study also found that: - 28.5% of Australians experienced sexual abuse - 30.9% experienced emotional abuse - 8.9% experienced neglect - And 39.6% were exposed to domestic violence against another family member. While the findings are confronting, this knowledge confirms the importance of delivering trauma-informed care.
