We have some exciting news! Our team member, Sara Kate Smith has been appointed as the first-ever Canadian representative to the World Food Forum’s Youth Policy Board (YPB). As part of the YPB, Sara will have the opportunity to work on pressing regional and thematic agri-food issues worldwide, from food insecurity to sustainability. Sara's appointment is a reflection of her dedication to Canada’s agri-food sector, including serving in roles with the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council and @AAFC Sector Engagement Tables. We couldn’t be more proud of her and her ongoing leadership in the space!

We spent quality time in Ottawa this week with amazing people from across the entire Agri-Food value chain!
Next time I load the dishwasher, I’ll be thinking about agriculture innovation… This week, at the Future of Food conference hosted by FCC / FAC it felt like almost the entire value chain (or at least 750 of us) gathered to celebrate Canada's Agriculture Day. Incredible thought leaders (like Michèle Boudria, Vidya ShankarNarayan, and Murad Al-Katib, just to name a few) helped drive numerous important conversations forward, ranging from the role of industry collaboration to hacking agri-tech solutions. But three specific ideas resonated with me the most: 1) Reframing Innovation: We should view our sector’s approach to innovation differently. Innovation doesn't replace labour; rather, it fundamentally changes the time and labour required. Much like having a dishwasher in your kitchen doesn't mean you never handle dishes, but it sure makes the process easier.✨ 2) Scaling Opportunities: Canadian agriculture doesn't have a start-up problem; it has a scale-up problem. We have room to grow, address gaps, and significantly contribute to Canada's GDP while still becoming global leaders in sustainable agriculture. 3)Breaking Down Silos: We're still grappling with siloed approaches across the industry (pun intended). To prevent duplication of initiatives and efforts (think MRV systems or labour recruitment strategies), we must improve communication, pinpoint duplication, and prioritize the most realistic opportunities for success. To me, one thing is clear: For anyone, especially young people, looking for an industry to bet on, find value in, and grow alongside, Canadian agriculture is the answer. Happy Canada's Ag Day! It’s been a busy start to the year for Clear Strategy! We are thrilled that Circular Action Alliance has been selected as the PRO in California and honored that we’ve been able to lead this groundbreaking project. CLEAR has supported CAA since its inception, and are so proud to see the hard work, dedication, insight, and experience of the entire project team and board members pay off. This was a huge team effort and we’re excited to continue supporting the first PRO for EPR packaging in the U.S. and look forward to what 2024 has in store!
CAA is honored to have been selected by CalRecycle as the Producer Responsibility Organization for the state’s Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act. We are committed to working with the state, producers and other stakeholders to build a successful Extended Producer Responsibility program for single-use packaging and plastic single-use food service ware to advance California’s goals of preventing plastic pollution and building a circular economy. The team recently met up in Niagara-on-the-Lake to spend a couple of days taking stock of the year that passed, and plan for the year ahead.
