As I stated in a previous post where Greg Norman won £70,000 for his victory at Trump Turnberry in The Open 1986 - The winners checks should return to a normal level so the The R&A can spend more globally promoting the game as they are charged to do - same goes for the United States Golf Association (USGA) & PGAs. It is not any way in their remit to pay pros generational wealth in a single check. I keep hearing the from the pros themselves that they are playing for legacy and trophies not money - The for profits (PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)) & others that self-fund (LIV Golf, Masters) may increase the purses as much as they like and sponsors will support - but the organizations that grow the game from grass roots support so that the leaderboards are full of flags from around the world should have the support of the professionals to cap the purses - The prestige of the Major shouldn't be contingent of the amount of the winners check. As Martin Slumbers bravely brought attention to the fact the escalation of purses on Golf's most important organizations is unsustainable. In addition, a reduction in the overall men's purse would, like tennis, hopefully allow equal men's and women's payouts in the majors hosted by those organizations as they support both. Country clubs and golf courses are at a pivot point, and Blake Walker is banking that subscription models are the future of the industry. The veteran hospitality executive and CEO of the privately held Arcis Golf is bucking the idea that country clubs and daily-fee golf courses are inherently different. That’s why he formed Arcis in 2014. Over the past decade, the company — with the backing of Fortress Investment Group and Atairos — purchased nearly 70 clubs and has grown to about 6,000 employees. The company now holds a roughly equal mix of daily-fee courses and private country clubs that includes several high-profile courses, including Champions Retreat Golf Club near Augusta, Georgia, a 27-hole private course designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. But it also includes public courses that many golfers frequent, including Angel Park Golf Club in Las Vegas and Arrowhead Golf Club in Littleton, Colorado. Traditionally, the two concepts haven’t mixed, but Walker is betting on a future in which people can move from one to the other as their lives change — and enjoy broader access than just their own local club or course. “My belief at Arcis’ inception (was) that there are far more commonalities than differences between daily-fee courses and private courses,” Walker said. His goal is to create an ecosystem that includes everything from entry-level to upscale clubs in every major metro in the U.S. The company has acquired and invested $100 million in dense pockets of courses around major metros. In 2021, he told the Dallas Business Journal, his plans to double the company over the next five years, through acquisitions and organic growth Walker's company is seeking to disrupt traditional models at an inflection point for golf courses and country clubs alike. Fenway Sports Group led a $3B investment in PGA TOUR, according to multiple sources [Forbes, linked here, as well as Boston Globe Media, The Washington Post, &c] Fenway owns the Boston Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Liverpool Football Club in the The Premier League in the #UnitedKingdom. FSG's boss is #billionaire John Henry. The new company gives investors "a minority share in a new #PGA company and allows #pro #golfers to hold ownership stakes," Forbes writes. It also provides some stability for the #golf group, which had hit some rough seas in its battle with LIV Golf, owned by the #Saudi #sovereignwealth fund. July saw a "shocking" move [according to The Associated Press item on it] wherein PGA Tour, LIV Golf and the European Tour combined their commercial businesses. The actual PGA Tour deal is with The Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of #sports property owners.
