Hydrogen-fueled trucks eliminate transport emissions in Europe 💧🚚 Hydrogen offers significant benefits for achieving zero-emission in terms of longer range, shorter refuelling time and higher payload than battery electric trucks. SINTEF is honoured to coordinate the H2Accelerate TRUCKS project, dedicated to decarbonizing long-haul, heavy-duty trucking across Europe. Public support from Clean Hydrogen Partnership provides for a cross-disciplinary collaboration between leading European truck manufacturers, hydrogen producers, infrastructure operators, and research institutions. Significant investment from project partners is a prerequisite for succeeding in this joint endeavour. In this project's second year, the truck manufacturers are focusing on further improving performance, increasing reliability, and reducing cost. At the same time, fuel suppliers are preparing for increased availability of green hydrogen along the The Trans-European Transport Network corridors. Unlike Tesla (who developed charging stations in concert with their roll out of electric vehicles ) Toyota rolled out hydrogen vehicles without financially viable hydrogen refueling stations. This left a taxi company with a number of dead Toyota vehicles in Denmark and a fuel company closing down. A similar situation is happening to some Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM = existing auto manufacturers) who have decided not to take advantage of the existing Tesla charging station network for their new EV’s. No settled charging standards = no charging within easy reach. Recommendation: Do your research if you intend to buy an EV.

Nikola Corporation has officially delivered the first production Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck in North America, marking a monumental milestone in the journey towards zero-emission mobility solutions. As we strive for a more sustainable future, Nikola’s achievement underscores the significant potential of hydrogen fuel technology in transforming the commercial transportation industry. With a total of 42 hydrogen trucks produced this quarter—35 of which have been dispatched to dealers and seven retained for testing and fleet demonstrations—Nikola is actively demonstrating its commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. It’s thrilling to see major players like Biagi Bros, IMC Logistics, 4Gen/Duncan and Sons Lines, Alberta Motor Transport, and Coyote Container embracing this shift, showcasing the industry’s readiness for clean energy solutions. Moreover, Nikola’s remarkable achievement of securing 99.9% of the hydrogen fuel truck HVIP vouchers in California (355 out of 360) from 2023 through January 2024 emphasizes the company’s leading position in the market and highlights the state’s support for green transportation initiatives. As we witness these advancements, it’s clear that the future of transportation is leaning towards sustainability. Nikola’s progress not only paves the way for cleaner logistics and transportation options but also represents a significant leap towards reducing our carbon footprint and combating climate change.
