Music Marketer, Artist Manager, & Adjunct Professor of Music Business

I officially submitted the final exam grades for the Artist Management course I teach at the Roc Nation School of Music Sports & Entertainment, and the Structure of the Music Industry course at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development's Music Business Program. Across both exams, I always include one similar extra credit question: "Describe a new insight from this semester that either surprised you, inspired you, or altered your understanding of the music business." Here are some of my favorite answers from both classes this semester: 🎵"Although I knew how little artists were compensated for streams, it still surprised me how hard it is to be profitable as an artist. The idea of unrecouped funds and the economics behind streaming inspired me, as I have always loved economics, but am excited to now apply it to music. This class has inspired me to continue taking classes about the music industry, and go into music business as a career." 🎵"During this semester, I learned a lot of new information that gave me a ton of insight on the music industry. I learned about different types of copyright and how I can copyright my own music to prevent future lawsuits and copyright infringement." 🎵 "One of the most insightful lessons from this semester was realizing the immense value of ChatGPT and the potential of custom bots tailored for artists. Professor Durant's teachings shed light on how AI can revolutionize various aspects of the music industry, from fan engagement to data analysis. Exploring the capabilities of ChatGPT and custom bots has sparked a newfound understanding of how tech can empower artists and industry professionals." 🎵"I learned that artist development requires meticulous planning and a deep understanding of data and agreements, as managers must strategically navigate touring, streaming models, and promotional activities to ensure sustainable growth and success in the music industry. I was surprised to discover just how vital it is to strategize touring routes and expenses to maximize revenue while minimizing costs, given the multitude of factors that influence the success of each show." 🎵"Thanks to this class, I have enrolled in the Music Contracts and Deal Making course for next semester. I aim to gain more knowledge and insight into the various deals that artists and their teams will encounter during their careers." 🎵"This entire semester was the most eye-opening experience for me, both in class and through the extracurricular activities Professor Durant forwarded or invited me to. In addition to finally getting a detailed rundown of how the industry operates, I was able to take a significant step into the music business that I have been passionate about for so long. It has been nothing short of inspiring, enlightening, and life-changing." For the music business students out there, was there something a professor taught you that inspired, intrigued, or changed your perspective on the industry?

Joseph Pignato was the best teacher I ever had and taught me so much about the merging of commerce and art, and how the entertainment/music business is a balance between artistic creations and all the different revenue streams of that art, in the context of a large scale industry. There are two quotes of his that have always stuck with me, and are important for emerging professionals in the music business to remember. "Opportunity is where hard work meets luck," and "In the music business, it's not just about who you know, but about HOW they know you. Don't be an ass."

Hey Clayton, I am self taught. It would be great for me to do the exam just to see my grade ;) Would you give me the opportunity to do it? Thanks so much

My favorite professor asked me "what are you doing here? aren't you signed?" 😂

I've learned that networking is incredibly important! Building a community of like-minded individuals and lifting each other up is key! Ps: your class sounds amazing, I have a few friends at NyU & Rock Nation 😊

In January, I asked ChatGPT when the Super Bowl was going to happen. ChatGPT’s response? February 6. A Tuesday.

I love this! You should start a blog or Insta or something highlighting comments from the students. Those of us deep in the industry need to be reminded how different our crazy industry is.
