Singer-songwriter Maren Morris once sang, “WHY DON’T YOU JUST MEET ME IN THE MIDDLE?” and I can’t help to think about how many issues in this job market would be resolved by this advice.
I was texting with my good friend, and he said “{when interviewing}, it feels like companies are wanting ‘unicorns’… and think they can find one out there because there’s so many candidates who are applying.”
Since I play the role of connecting talent to opportunity, I see this.
I am also seeing the other side. Candidates are driving up their asking price thinking, “Since the company likes me so much, they should pay a premium.”
This is where Ms. Morris's lyrics come into play. A company’s budget is their budget and just because there is a ‘top of the range’, doesn’t mean every candidate warrants the top. That being said, when it comes to a laundry list of wishes; companies need to find where they can be flexible in terms of skills.
