Dr Alice Venn and I are pleased to invite you to the first in a series of workshops and away days designed for those working in the Bristol Environment Sector, broadly conceived. https://lnkd.in/eskStaDJ We are proud to offer these completely free events for environmental policy makers, community groups, and NGOs. The workshops and away days will be focusing on aspects of diversity and inclusion. This is part of our continuing work on just transition in the city of Bristol, which aims to make the environmental sector more inclusive. The first workshop will focus on 'Building Positive and Inclusive Relationships' and is currently scheduled for October 10th, between 1-4. The four key topics of this workshop will be: -How to engage in effective and respectful communication. -The power of Micro-Affirmations -Principles for ‘Respectful Inquiry’ -How to Create an Inclusive Meeting Space The workshop will be run by the Diversity Trust, and Dr Dietzel will be present on the day to participate and answer any questions about the ongoing just transition project. We will be offering teas, coffees, and pastries during the event. This event is funded by the Cabot Institute and Policy Bristol. Bridging Industry and Community: A Strategic Win-Win Today's dynamic business landscape is not just about profit margins and shareholder value. Engagement with our local communities is an often overlooked but decisive strategic move. I am proud to facilitate these discussions with #LifeInTheHeartland. The conversations are engaging and informative for both the community members and the company representatives who attend. Some takeaways after our third meeting this past week: ➡Right to Know Communities have a right to be informed about operations and activities behind the fencelines of industrial operations. This openness can foster collaboration and mitigate potential concerns. ➡Local Credibility Building trust with locals leads to an enriched brand reputation for companies. ➡Shared Success A thriving community boosts support through loyalty, partnerships, and innovation. ➡Sustainable Growth Economic prosperity is amplified when businesses and communities align their goals. Community involvement promotes long-term planning and sustainable strategies. ➡Assumptions Companies must approach community engagement with an open mind and avoid making assumptions, as understanding and active listening are the cornerstones of true collaboration. By integrating with the local community, industry aren't merely offering financial or infrastructural support. They're weaving into the fabric of the community's identity, listening to their needs, and co-creating solutions. It's a synergy where companies and the community grow together. As we strategize for the future, let's remember the power of local engagement and recognize the strategic value in the hearts of our local communities. This is a good demonstration of the use of Bureau of Meteorology seasonal forecasts.

Six months ago, I did a talk at the annual CLIA in Europe conference. The theme was sustainability, and exploring ways the industry can move forward in an environmentally engaged manner. The debate was lively, the presentations well attended, and the subsequent conversations genuinely absorbing. But one conversation stood out. I'd mentioned a project in my speech, one that would find, celebrate, and bring profile to marine community conservation initiatives. From saying those words, to Ben Bouldin stepping in to offer support for the project was about ten minutes. For that support to be realised from Royal Caribbean Group took about four weeks - a remarkably short turnaround. For the project itself to take place took four months. And now, here we sit, looking back at what I'm euphemistically terming phase one, but what was essentially a summer that encountered and filmed numerous community supported conservation projects along our coastline. The film below is a short summary of that project, what it might bring in the future as a template for further conservation work in creating more citizen science initiatives, and how we might enable local people to get stuck in to their own area of coastline by using these examples. Project Dandelion a new women led global climate justice campaign Women led, not women only The project is inspired by the resilience of the dandelion, the only flower that blooms on every continent. It has one goal - to make more dandelions and that is their goal too! I love this. The climate crisis is a communications crisis.
