Universities are about atmosphere. The most vital part of great innovations that make a society.

This is such an important point, Tanya Ramond, PhD MBA. So much attention is put on the work required to bring an emerging technology to market, but little attention is paid to the effort required to turn a research scientist into someone who can successfully bring a new technology to market. If we are to "ensure US leadership in critical and emerging technologies," we need to focus on teaching the tech experts how to develop products and function in the fast-paced and profit-driven world of industry.

The Lazaridis Institute aims to assist technology firms as they scale up and into global markets. We do this by gathering insights from a diverse team of scholars, shaping our research mandate around two key themes: 👉Managing through the scaling process 👉Scaling to be globally competitive We engage with technology companies on both local and global scales, as well as collaborate with research institutions. Today the National Science Board (NSB) released a policy brief called 'A Changed Science and Engineering Landscape' with the following three key points 1. Federal investment is the foundation but business funds most US R&D 2. China is our biggest competitor and collaborator 3. A need to re-build STEM education and build a robust STEM workforce These are all vital findings and perhaps not surprising. But here is the point that NO ONE is mentioning. If we want to "ensure US leadership in critical and emerging technologies", as the report demands, one major leak in the pipeline is the enormous deficit in entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial education. There are precious few professor positions and yet PhDs receive nearly no education and support to apply their skills outside academia. We have amazing STEM technology coming out of our universities and yet there is little education within the university system or after addressing how to use these findings to solve real world problems. [This is changing slowly, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) iCorps program is a great start, but so much more is needed.] R&D in corporations may be funded, but the operational machinery needed to translate that to products that move the needle is often underfunded or not funded. The 'build it and they will come' mentality is the rule and not the exception in academic, government, and corporate spheres. We must start talking about these concepts of entrepreneurial education, customer discovery, product management, and business essentials within the context of US Leadership and national competitiveness. Investing in STEM education and R&D budgets is one essential part of the pipeline, but if your workforce does not know how to use that knowledge to solve real world problems, then a good portion of that investment is lost. To move the needle and cement our Science and Engineering leadership, we must think of our efforts as a combination of technology AND adoption. I say that the national response must include not an incremental change, but a paradigm shift in how we measure impact. Pushing out technology cannot be the end measure of success. In a story for the Harvard Business Review, #NYUTandon visiting research professor of Innovation, Design and Organizational Studies in the Department of Technology Management and Innovation Anne-Laure Fayard and The Dock researcher Martina Mendola, PhD outline the 3-stage process that makes universities prime innovators— drawing on their experiences from New York University and the DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Both the NYU Tandon Future Labs and the Prototyping Fund, a collaborative program provided by the Design Lab @ NYU MakerSpace and NYU Entrepreneurial Institute are brought up as examples of how universities can progressively leverage their resources, capabilities, and networks to foster innovation not only by students and faculty, but also by actors in their broader communities.
