Among the new laws for California is one designed to reduce waste in our landfills, all while feeding more people in need. Senate Bill 1383 first went into effect in 2022 requiring certain businesses, such as grocery stores, to donate unused food to food recovery organizations like Feeding San Diego. As of January 1, 2024, the law expanded to include hotels, restaurants with more than 5,000 square feet or more than 250 seats, health facilities with onsite food facilities and more than 100 beds, state agency cafeterias, local education agencies and large venues and events. President & CEO | Non-profit Leadership & Fund-Development | Thought Leader | Public Speaker | Strategy Consultant Author
From $.67 cents to $5,000,000, over the years as a fundraiser I have received on behalf of various organizations all sizes of gifts to support community, education, and public health issues. Each gift is important, and they all add up to make differences that last in the lives of those being served. Recently, I had the privilege to share my thoughts on philanthropic investments. Ultimately, the message is to invest early and often. Nonprofits are a reactionary sector in many ways, mostly because we must prove need and impact before we can work to solve the problem at hand. Though when I have worked with funders who invested early, the outcome of the impact has been far greater and longer lasting. As we round the year to a close, I am sure you are receiving no less than 5-7 request per day for support. I hope, regardless of your gift size, you will consider making that gift, and giving a bit more. The overall need is rising faster than most of us can keep up with. The organizations you support are impacting our economic sustainability, are major players in our overall matters of public health, and developing a work force for the future through in and out of school education programs. We need you. I hope in this season of giving that Crossroads Community Services is on your list of organizations to support. And if not, I thank you on behalf of our partners who are part of your philanthropic investment planning. Get to know what we are doing now and how your giving will foster innovation to better address the increases we are seeing in need. Together, we can and we will create communities that are nutritionally stable, work force viable, and economically contributing to the healthy growth of our children and families. #buildingnutritionstablecommunities #seasonofgiving #philanthropymatters

Here is a message from our Executive Director about our annual report with a link to it!
Every year nonprofit organizations send out annual reports highlighting their work. This time around, REAP is releasing the Big REAPort, which is a 2 year annual report for 2022 and 2023. Things got a little hectic last summer and we decided to to a 2 year report and release it early 2024. I also love the name of the report so much. This was a lot of work to put together, but it's concise and to the point and easy to read. Thanks to many REAP staff for putting this together. We also decided to just send via email and link to our website and social media accounts. Here is the link if you want to read it:

Matt Jozwiak, a former chef, founded Rethink Food in 2017 to bridge the gap between excess food and communities in need. The nonprofit has since donated over 24 million meals and rescued more than 2.4 million pounds of food. Rethink Food's model, which supports local restaurants, has been shown by our study to create 50% more jobs and deliver more funding to minority- and women-owned businesses. In this article, we take a look at how this innovative approach has helped secure $65 million in contracts for small business owners. https://mck.co/4bWt6Jk #Nonprofit #smallbusiness

"Food Solutions New England (FSNE) was launched in 2011 as a regional, six-state network that unites the food system community around a shared set of values - democratic empowerment, racial equity and #dignity for all #sustainability, and #trust - and strengthens the movement’s ability to achieve the goals of A New England Food Vision. Crafted following region-wide gatherings in each New England state organized by FSNE, A New England Food Vision articulates a vision of a powerful food movement that democratically transforms the food system so that it is sustainable, just, and resilient. "Over the following years, FSNE has focused on four overlapping and interdependent impact areas as a unique and essential contribution to the regional food system - Network Expansion and Movement Weaving, #Equity Leadership Development and Practice, Integrated Regional #Policy, and #Narrative Strategy. Complementary to the work of FSNE network partners, these impact areas drive the strategy of FSNE and the backbone team in stewarding the goals and values of A New England Food Vision. They are designed to support and seek input from the regional #foodsystem community while fostering a collaborative and creative environment for everyone to pursue unique, yet connected, approaches to food-related work. "By supporting the development of a network of compelling, committed, and diverse advocates and practitioners centered around a shared set of #values, actionable solutions that are rooted in communities across the region continue to emerge in pursuit of a just transition of the food system. "Some of the specific projects of Food Solutions New England that intersect with multiple impact areas are: FSNE 21-Day Racial Equity Habit-Building Challenge, Campaign for Climate Resilience, Campaign for Right to Food, Network Leadership Institute, Northeast Food Systems Communicators Community of Practice, FSNE Winter Intensives ... This (net)work is needed now more than ever. Our original commitment was to a generation of work (25 years) and we are half-way there. Your support for students at DU goes directly to providing food for students experiencing food insecurity. See the link below for a quick way to give.
Are you working on holiday meal plans or heading to the grocery store for a holiday shop soon? If so, it's a great time to also make a donation to the Food Pantry at the University of Denver. Food insecurity is all-too-common among undergraduate and graduate students across the country, with impacts on their health and learning. At DU, a student-founded Food Pantry has grown into an essential student-run resource, supported by the Center for Sustainability (with whom I get to work!). Join me today in supporting this student-led effort to address student food insecurity. Thank you! https://lnkd.in/gmTFzzik

Regional Chancellor, University of South Florida St. Petersburg / Strategic Higher Education Leader / Fulbrighter
HAILING THE HERD! Support-A-Bull at USF St. Petersburg Needs YOUR HELP!!! When new students start the new year, the financial package is delayed a few weeks due to the federal aid requirements (confirming eligibility, # of credit hours to fund, etc.). For veterans, the processing lag means it may be 8-to-10 weeks before the checks arrive to support the student . We defer the tuition payment on their account ... but they may still need support for basic living needs. Thus, our Support-A-Bull Market comes into play - supplying everything from non-perishable food items to pet food to hygiene products. Please consider supporting our Herd (and students in the University of South Florida Office of Veteran Success) and donating to our Support-A-Bull Market! #SupportABull #SupportingStudents #StudentSuccess #RetainingStudents #ExceptionalEducation #USFStPetersburg #GoBulls #HerdFunding
