The Washtenaw 100 Club and surrounding agencies gathered at the corner of Ballard and Congress to pay tribute to those in law enforcement and fire services who gave the ultimate sacrifice. During the ceremony, the bell rang 13 times for the 13 officers and firefighters who have died in the line of duty within Washtenaw County. Members of the local police department Honor Guard units concluded the ceremony by performing a flag-folding ceremony. The Ypsilanti Police Department has only had one officer die in the line of duty, Douglas D. Downing, on July 11, 1975. Ofc. Downing was gunned down responding to a bank robbery in the area of Park and E. Michigan Ave. To all of the law enforcement and fire family survivors, along with those currently serving your communities, we thank you for your service. #NationalPoliceWeek
