The way that fire and water damage jobs are handled do have some similarities, but they can’t be interchanged. On fire damage jobs, confirm that only techs with at least a Fire and Smoke Restoration Technician (FSRT) certification are allowed on the site. Being Odor Control Technician (OCT) certified is also helpful. #DisasterRestoration

Meet Richard Smith, an Electrical Technician I in the Solid Waste Department. He has worked for the City of Tampa for 35 years and loves that his position requires the scientific know-how behind what makes a compactor with a hydraulic system work and how to fix it. What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen on the job? A fire started in a compactor I was working on due to lithium batteries and gun bullets being dumped into a compactor. As you can imagine, some people throw away items that should not be discarded in a compactor because they can cause great danger. Solid waste professionals can come across more hazards in just one day than most would realize. What do you like to do in your free time? I love playing hockey, ice hockey, and soccer - and working on construction projects. Most recently, my step-daughter had a baby so on the weekends, I am a full-time grandpa! Where’s your restaurant in Tampa? I love eating at the Jerk Hut. I am Jamaican so the food reminds me of home. What's the best piece of advice you have ever been given? Growing up, my father always told me "Whatever you do in life, be the best at it, even if it's a garbage man." I find it to be so ironic that that's exactly what I am doing today, being the best solid waste employee I can be! What bucket list item do you want to check off next? My bucket list item would be to ice skate at Rockefeller Center during the Christmas season as the Christmas trees light up! #Tampa #EmployeeAppreciation
