Happy Cinco de Mayo to all my connections! What Is Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrated on May 5 in parts of Mexico and the United States. The day commemorates the victory of the outnumbered Mexican army over the French army at the 1862 Battle of Puebla during the Second Franco-Mexican War. Contrary to popular opinion, Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexico’s independence. The actual Mexican Independence Day falls on Sept. 16 and celebrates the ‘Cry of Dolores’, the call to arms that launched the Mexican War of Independence. Today in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is actually a relatively minor holiday, according to History.com. It’s mainly celebrated in the state of Puebla, where the battle occurred, but other parts of the country do not typically mark the day in any major way. In the United States, on the other hand, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a more widespread celebration of Mexican culture and traditions. Cities around the U.S. celebrate the holiday with events highlighting traditional Mexican dancing, music and cuisine.

Valley Water's Organization for Latino Affairs (OLA) celebrated Día de los Muertos with an Ofrenda in our headquarters. Employees stopped by to learn more about this celebration of life and make their own contributions to our Ofrenda. Día de los Muertos primarily originated in Mexico and is traditionally a gathering of family and friends to pay respects and remember those who have passed. Butterfly-shaped post-its with the names of the dearly departed fly on our remembrance Ofrenda. Monarch butterflies are often associated with the Day of the Dead, and the arrival of the butterflies into Mexico for the winter coincides with the holiday. It was believed that the butterflies carried the spirits of the deceased back to the mortal world so that they could join in on the celebration. To help build community within and among our diverse workforce, Valley Water supports Employee Resource Groups (ERG) like OLA as a critical part of our workplace DEI strategy. Learn more about our ERGs at bit.ly/VW_REDI.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Whether celebrating with a MARCarita or a Mockarita, here are a few fun facts about this day: 🇲🇽 Cinco de Mayo is seen as a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. It's a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage, as well as the spirit of resistance against foreign domination. 🇲🇽 Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day. It actually commemorates a significant battle during the Franco-Mexican War that took place in Puebla. Mexico's Independence Day is on September 16th. 🇲🇽 Cinco de Mayo didn't gain traction in the US until 1933 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped create the "Good Neighbor Policy," which aimed to establish positive exchanges and relationships with our Latin American neighbors. 🇲🇽 According to the US Department of Agriculture, Americans eat over 80 million pounds of avocados on Cinco de Mayo alone. 🇲🇽 Cinco de Mayo is not a federal holiday in Mexico, but luckily for children, schools are closed for the day. 🇲🇽 Denver's Cinco de Mayo Festival is one of the largest in the US. An estimated 400,000 people attend over two days to participate in parades, carnival rides, and a taco-eating contest.

🎉 We would like to wish EVERYONE a happy Cinco de Mayo today 🎉 Cinco de Mayo literally means “May 5” in Spanish, which is when this celebration of Mexican heritage falls each year. The day, mostly commemorated by Mexican Americans north of the U.S. border, is also celebrated in Puebla, the town and region southeast of Mexico City, where the holiday originated. At our organization, we strongly believe in celebrating and embracing all the unique traditions and skills that make up our diverse population. 🌎🌍🌏 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are what make us great. While many people celebrate Cinco de Mayo here in the U.S., very few Americans are aware that Cinco de Mayo is actually Mexico’s Independence Day. I have included this article that discusses Mexico’s rich history to provide a greater meaning and context. This article not only discussses how Mexico gained their independence on May 5, 1862 from Napoleon and France’s occupation, but also shares information about Mexico’s role in both the Civil War and WWII where Mexican soldiers fought for freedom. Many Mexican soldiers had received Medals of Honor for their service in WWII. This article also shares information about Chicano history in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Some of that same information is referenced and can be found in the book The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism which also referenced the Chicago School of Business which influenced the teaching of economics within numerous Ivy League colleges and universities.
