Founder|Director|Trainer @CAICR & Insight Policing. Teaching Insight conflict resolution theory and skills to professionals that deal in high conflict, have a stake in the public good, and an impact on social justice
Conflict resolution skills are important not only for police officers, but for anyone in public-facing professions. After all, these skills are about more than gaining compliance - they’re about communicating, connecting, and finding solutions to hard problems without the fight. WSSC Water saw the value of our training this way. After training their police and security departments, we were asked to train their civilian employees too - field technicians, customer service staff, claims representatives and more. Working with these employees means that the organization as a whole is building its conflict competency to ensure positive outcomes for both staff and the customers they serve. And it’s working! Participants are saying: “Before this I was unsure on how to de-escalate tense situations but feel more confident resolving them now.” “I hope to use these skills to more quickly resolve conflict and empathize with customers facing conflict and difficult situations.” Thanks to WSSC for trusting us with this important work! And thanks to Michael Delaney for taking the lead. #Insightapproach #conflictcommunication #stressfreeworkplace

In public safety, it's crucial that you work together as a team. 👉🏼 And a team is more than just a collection of individuals; it's a cohesive unit. Let's break this quote down. It's important for public safety workers to... • Value one another: Recognizing and appreciating the unique skills and expertise that your team members bring enhances the overall effectiveness of your team. • Respect one another: You encounter challenges and pressures in your daily duties; respecting each other helps maintain professionalism and camaraderie. • Trust one another: Trust is the foundation of any effective team, and it's especially important in law enforcement. Officers must trust their colleagues to have their backs in high-stress situations. • Care for one another: Law enforcement can be emotionally and physically demanding. Showing care and support for one another can help officers cope with the stresses of the job. It can also foster a sense of belonging that is vital for morale and mental well-being. Send this post to a public safety worker in your life! 💙 #DefendingThoseWhoProtectOthers #lawenforcement #policelife #policeinspiration

We talk officer safety.... I found this clip and thought it was interesting because it escalated quickly. Could the interaction been different? was there a time where it could have been deescalted? Is the home owner a threat? Was the officer In immediate danger? Should the officer have acknowledged the property owners concern? Was the officer right by pushing the door? Can you relate to the dog owner? Could you relate to the officer? Were there key words that could have been used? Was there a moment to strategically end the interaction? Folks forget being a public servant is not just about enforcement it's about communicating. In real time we all respond differently. Some folks freeze, some use their training to resolve the situation, and others become defensive. I believe this could have differently had communication changed. Interested in everyone's take... #codeenforcement #officersafety #codeenforcementsafety #communication #deescalation #verbalcommunication

Emergency Service Control Rooms What's the real cost of not addressing high turnover? 🌟 Increased risk to members of the public as more less experienced staff are taking calls 🌟 Loss of operational knowledge and experience 💷 Cost of recruiting, interviewing, assessing, vetting applicants 💷 Cost of training 💷 Cost of mentoring new staff (paying experienced operator to mentor a new person means not having their skills available for 4 weeks, paying for two people and getting one job) 📉 Reduced staff morale 📉 Poorer quality applicants as the recruitment pool gets smaller 📈 Increase in sick days The solution will include various factors depending on the root cause for your organisation - but it often starts with this: Manage the people, not the numbers #police #fire #frs #controlrooms #999 #retention #wecandobetter

#I_am_a_Safety_Professional I am not a police officer and I do not write citations. My job is to monitor, audit, review and advise. I do not have the ability nor the desire to "Fire" anyone. My goal is to make sure each employee goes home to his/her family at the end of their shift. I will be firm, fair and consistent with my responses. My ability to communicate is my strongest tool. I understand the making someone follow a rule is easy, but making them want to follow it is my job. I identify gaps in the processes and advise my client on the best way to correct it. My positive attitude, personality and common sense will take me further than any degree or certification I may have. Because, I am a Safety Professional. #Safety_First #Happy_Friday

For those of you in Public Safety, does the Dispatch Center you work with have a Quality Assurance and Improvement program? If you currently run a Dispatch Center for a Police/Fire/Ems agency, what does your QA/QI program look like? Does your program provide continuous, consistent feedback and opportunities for Live CE?

In this video, Kari Morrissey, Assistant Director, Anoka County Emergency Communications Center explains how NICE is helping Anoka take a proactive approach to Quality Assurance so it can meet NENA / APCO standards, improve response and service to its public safety partners, better support struggling telecommunicators through effective coaching, and improve retention. As a result of automating Quality Assurance, the center is now able to complete three times the number of QA reviews while reducing workloads on supervisors, so they can devote more time to supporting staff. The center has also seen a 10 percent improvement in staff retention, equating to 5 fewer resignations per year. I want to take a moment to appreciate the vital role of live fire training for our police officers. When it comes to protecting and ensuring public safety, police officers need to be prepared for any situation. Live fire training plays a crucial role in providing them with the necessary skills and experience to effectively handle life-threatening encounters. Here's why it's so important: 1️⃣ Enhancing Tactical Skills: Live fire exercises allow officers to practice their marksmanship, accuracy, and decision-making under realistic and high-pressure scenarios. This training hones their ability to neutralize threats while minimizing risk to innocent bystanders. 2️⃣ Stress Inoculation: In real-life situations, officers face intense stress, making split-second decisions critical. Live fire training helps simulate these high-stress environments, enabling officers to develop resilience, maintain composure, and make accurate judgments even under immense pressure. 3️⃣ Situational Awareness: Live fire drills replicate real-world scenarios, exposing officers to various environments, obstacles, and unpredictable elements. This helps them develop keen situational awareness, allowing them to assess threats, identify potential risks, and adapt their tactics accordingly. 4️⃣ Team Coordination: Law enforcement often operates in teams, and live fire training fosters effective communication, coordination, and teamwork among officers. By practicing together, officers synchronize their efforts, leading to improved response times and enhanced safety for both officers and the public. 5️⃣ Minimizing Collateral Damage: The focus of live fire training is not only on honing shooting skills but also on ensuring officers understand the importance of using force judiciously. By emphasizing accuracy and precision, live fire exercises train officers to minimize collateral damage and protect innocent lives. Remember, the ultimate goal of live fire training is to equip our police officers with the skills and mindset they need to protect and serve our communities in the safest and most effective way possible. Let's appreciate their dedication and the sacrifices they make to keep us safe. #LiveFireTrainin #oxfordpd #PublicSafety
