Copied from a friend that was gracious enough to post this for those that are in need of a new career: I know it’s not as sexy as a company that shows up in Super Bowl ads, but I’d like to humbly suggest that anyone looking right now who’s interested in stability check out local government jobs. Many are in desperate need of tons of roles, and tech-savvy individuals in general even if not in technology roles directly! Additionally, many roles are union-protected and the benefits and stability are head and shoulders above a for-profit company - I once had someone tell me that I “have the most job security of any person [he’s] ever met”. Former FOCers are practically super-powered in the environment of many local governments because of the embedded cultural drive for excellence that is instilled or biased for in hiring at the FOC. It’s not as high-tech, and yes some things can move at a painfully slow pace, but the work-life balance and job satisfaction are unbeatable. A City/County Manager search is a delicate balance between confidentiality and transparency. Candidates need confidentiality until they are the chosen candidate and local governments feel pressure from their citizens to be transparent and include them in the decision making process. This tension can discourage good candidates from exploring new jobs. In Florida, candidate names are public record upon application. In Georgia, once a local government gets down to three finalists the names of the finalists are public record. As an executive search recruiter I try to balance these interests and protect our candidates confidentiality. Communicating to the candidates their risks of exposure risks proactively is important, as well as pointedly warning clients to respect the process and not disclose candidate names. In this article, a City Manager is apparently fired after his candidacy for another job is discovered (even after he withdrew from the search). This is the worst fear of a candidate realized. Some will say that your loyalty is in question when you explore other jobs and others will say there is no harm in exploring opportunities that may offer you a higher wage, a more stable environment, bigger challenges or a better location for your family. For this City Manager, exploring a potentially better opportunity seems to have cost him his job. What do you think is the right balance between confidentiality and transparency? https://lnkd.in/gA5mTxxD
