Did you know that several major construction projects are poised to finish in the next few years? Now is the perfect time to begin a career in the highway maintenance and road-building industry. There is currently a critical shortage of skilled workers for trained highway maintenance positions, including plow truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, and mechanics. The RoadShow is the perfect opportunity for anyone to learn about the industry, experience a day in the life of the job, and determine if this could be the right career path for you. "Helping employers remove barriers to the workplace means more people can work and participate in their communities," said Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. Idle construction equipment is no different than paying an FTE salary to a worker who does nothing for 15 of the 40 hours each week. 🚜 It's unsettling to see that dozer sitting idle, gathering dust. Let’s look at a real-world scenario that plays out nearly every single day. Job A’s need for your only bulldozer is over. Job B needs that dozer…like, now. The problem? You have neither the person-power nor the time to get the dozer from Job A to B. Oh, and Job B is two states away. So it sits. Maybe it’s only for a few days. Maybe it’s for a few weeks. But how does that saying go? “Time is money.” What if you could get that bulldozer right to Job B and get that crew running today? How would that help keep things on track and help your schedules and bottom line? Now multiply that by 2. No, 3. 10? It’s about scale. The more you can utilize that heavy equipment, the more profit you’re driving to that bottom line. SCALE! Time really is money. You wouldn’t accept your best worker sitting idle for almost half of her week, would you? Then why are you doing it with your heavy equipment? Partner with a company that can take this off your plate so you can keep your machines, and workers, working. #HeavyEquipment #Construction

Can we just get to work? Let’s face it, sometimes job site communication gets complicated. Explaining what needs to get done can take more time than it should. But there’s a simple way to solve it. Just send a picture. Stop wasting your time trying to explain every last detail, send a picture and SHOW your crew what needs to get done. *Secret Stars Spotlight* Highway Assurance employees can regularly be seen across the regional road network 24/7, carrying out essential & planned Traffic Management & Civil Engineering works.....But, we have some amazing secret stars who deliver day in & day out for our customers, so over the next few weeks & months, we would like to introduce you to some of them. This time our secret Star is Gavin Johnson. *My Role*: Mechanic & Overall Skilled Tradesman- Vehicles, plant, plumbing & carpentry. There is nothing Gavin can't make or fix! *A Bit About Me*: This is the second time I have worked for highway assurance over the years. I have done all sorts of jobs, but I always come back to the same field of work, I think must just like getting dirty & enjoy getting things fixed. I currently ensure the vehicles & plant are in working order for our guys & girls to do their jobs. I troubleshoot daily issues that all transport operations may face, such as changing tyres, bulbs, wipers & batteries. I also attend break downs in order to get our team back on the road again as quickly as possible to ensure our service is not affected too much after the event of a break down. My record so far is getting dispatched with the correct equipment 8 minutes after receiving the call & I had my colleague back on the road within the hour, this is including travel. Outside of work I like to chill out in the garden, having a few beers and a BBQ. *Best Part Of Working For Highway Assurance*: With my job role there are plenty of challenges, which can be anything from vehicle maintenance to building maintenance so every day is different. *Favourite Work Moment*: It has to be winning employee of the year. *Future Goals* Hopefully to catch up on outstanding jobs, but most of all to keep everyone moving safely & reduce vehicle downtime. *Favourite Meal* I have 2 favourites- I like curry & chips, but I do also like a nice chicken shish and Donna meat mix with chilli sauce. *Favourite Hobby* I like to keep busy & love being outside. I also love going away with my wife. It's usually somewhere quiet chilled out & usually with a hot tub!

Consulting - Accenture Strategy GN | Ex Market Ops - Ankorstore Paris | Ex DevOps - PGS Pune | MDI Gurgaon | ESCP Paris | Digital Transformation Professional | Product Owner
There are a lot of jobs that make our everyday lives possible, not just easy. We laud the catches, the sixes and the clean bowled wickets. We often forget about the reporters and the cameramen. The engineers who invented real-time predictive paths for each ball bowled and those who created the networks for live streaming across platforms. From the stadium to its lighting, civil engineers and masonry workers. But why limit ourselves to cricket? Delivery people, truck drivers who got the products there, construction agents who built the house, network service providers who help us do our jobs and keep us entertained, plumbers who let us have water to cook and clean, our CAs and our recruiters... The list of people we rely on to even live and have basic modern necessities fulfilled is too big. We often forget them. We often forget ourselves and our contributions. Clap for yourself for every metaphorical six you hit in life. For every job well done. You'll have superiors to criticize your mistakes to balance it off anyway. Everyone does.

I posted this yesterday, but I wanted to edit it and turn it into a question: What, if anything, should we do when we see unsafe behavior in places where we have no control? I am interested in your thoughts When I run errands, I try to spend as much time looking around and observing the world around me. Since I do what I do, I look at every construction site. In the last week, I have observed two sites, totally unrelated, with what appear to be significant safety issues. In the first, a large vertical construction site run by a large general contractor who knows better, I observed a worker on a scissor-lift at height sitting on the railing of the lift. He wasn't wearing a harness or tied off, but he had a belt around his legs and the rail of the lift that would, at best, hang him upside down if he were to fall. In the second, I watched a utility crew working along a roadway. There were two excavators and four people (plus operators) on the site. There were no barricades, only two of the laborers were wearing head protection, only one was wearing hi-vis, there were two in the trench without sheeting or trench box, and there was an awful lot of excavator bucket movment quite close to workers who weren't paying attention. I'm sure others see similar things, but what can we do? If these were our sites, we would immediately stop work and have a long discussion about safety, maybe suspending or removing people from the site, if needed. But, these aren't my sites, so what do I do? Safety is serious. Please take it seriously! #safety #ComeHomeAlive
