If you are a #dataengineer you need to know what are Window Functions in #SQL and the Types of Window Functions. Window functions in SQL are a powerful tool for performing calculations across sets of rows within a result set. Unlike aggregate functions (SUM, COUNT, AVG), which collapse rows into a single summary row, window functions allow you to perform calculations while retaining each row of data. They achieve this by looking at a defined "window" of rows around the current row being processed. * Broadly, there are three main categories of window functions: • Aggregate Window Functions: These perform aggregate calculations (SUM, AVG, MIN, MAX) over the window of rows. However, unlike regular aggregate functions, they return a value for each row. Example: SUM(sales) OVER (PARTITION BY product_id ORDER BY date) calculates the running total of sales for each product, ordered by date. • Ranking Window Functions: These assign a rank or position to each row within the window, based on the ordering specified. Example: ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY department_id ORDER BY salary DESC) assigns a rank (1st, 2nd, etc.) to each employee within a department, ordered by salary in descending order. • Value Window Functions: These access specific values from within the window. They can retrieve the first, last, or offset values based on the ordering. Example: LAST_VALUE(name) OVER (PARTITION BY department_id ORDER BY hire_date) retrieves the name of the most recently hired employee within each department. ♻ LIKE and REPOST this so others can take advantage of the knowledge 💬 COMMENT if you have any questions or suggestions 🙌 🧡 FOLLOW Vicky Wilson Jacob for more news, tips, and tricks to help YOU become expert Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Architect, Data Analyst, AWS Certified and advance your career. #dataengineering
