“Unprecedented” Google Cloud event wipes out customer account and its backups UniSuper, a $135 billion pension account, details its cloud compute nightmare. "A joint statement from UniSuper CEO Peter Chun, and Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian." This statement reads, "Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian has confirmed that the disruption arose from an unprecedented sequence of events whereby an inadvertent misconfiguration during provisioning of UniSuper’s Private Cloud services ultimately resulted in the deletion of UniSuper’s Private Cloud subscription. This is an isolated, ‘one-of-a-kind occurrence’ that has never before occurred with any of Google Cloud’s clients globally. This should not have happened. Google Cloud has identified the events that led to this disruption and taken measures to ensure this does not happen again." Providing my clients unmatched freedom of choice—any cloud, any analytics, any data - resulting in better decisions faster
UniSuper's woes remain a lesson for companies leaping cloudwards. Check out the Google and UniSuper joint statement. Deletion occurred May 2nd and it took over 13 days before services where fully restored on May 15th. 😮 Fortunately Unisuper had backups with another cloud provider. Imagine if they didn’t?? Someone clicking the wrong button, a previously unknown bug, an unforeseen series of events, or a combination of all three could have dire consequences for a business. #hybrid and #multicloud

Google's Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian has weighed in on the UniSuper fiasco. The multi region setup accidentally deleted... These incidents are possible, always ask the "What if question....?" The award winning IT support company you won't have to call - Founder and Director of West View IT based in Mid-Suffolk
Yes I know we go ON about the importance of backing up your Microsoft and Google data (cloud data). All of these cloud providers even state in their ToS that you are responsible for your own data, and we now have a bloody good example of this. Due to a miss configuration and entire global accounts data was deleted for UNISuper last week from Google's cloud service. Thank god they had a backup with a third party otherwise a week of disruption would have been an entire data loss across the board. West View IT backs up our client data on Microsoft 3653 times a day for exactly this purpose. Does yours? #smallbusiness #itsupport #backup

Consulting Futurist. I help leaders in higher education, foundations, and State & Local government to avoid the dangers of hype and build better futures in practical, actionable ways.
Ultimately, I suspect we're going to regret the Move to Cloud. Lots of Weak Signals lately pointing to the realizations of the lack of actual cost savings that were promised, along with the difficulties of your data being held hostage. Or, in cases like that below, we very much get Darth Vader "pray I don't alter the deal any further" vibes. I know a lot of Higher Ed got those vibes when Google went back on some of their storage promises a couple of years ago. And none of us are immune to that, at least not if you're continuing to rely on cloud services for critical business functions. It just may be that, in the back half of the 20's that we see people moving away from cloud services for a number of reasons. Resilience may end up being one of those reasons. #Cloud #WeakSignals (Image found on Bluesky)

When you put your critical applications on #cloud, #network #latency becomes very important. While we use dedicated link like #Google #CloudInterconnect from #onpremise to #cloud, #remote #connectivity on #internet is very important for e.g. #mobile #application Google Cloud uses the same #network backbone which is used by Google #search and YouTube following is #latency details used by one of the tool https://cloudpingtest.com/ Latency increases with distance, so I have used APAC city regions where all the 3 hyperscalers are present

Any regulation of The Cloud seems a long way off but the concerns listed in section 2 are certainly in-line with feedback i receive from my peer network, it will be interesting to see where this goes and if the thought of regulation changes creates a fairer space to operate in for end users and aggregators

This is amazing transparency from one of the biggest IT players. This kind of open blog shows that mistakes can happen regardless of size. If all companies shared at this level imagine the shared learning. Mistakes happen, we need to learn from them and move on, this is a truth I have lived by in my career and have spent time making sure the team Datactics knows. In other ways, this blog shows us the importance of data quality even when we are talking about something like lines of code. If you are facing any DQ issues or would like to talk about specific use cases please feel free to reach out for a chat and or a coffee 🙂
Google Cloud - GCP - accidentally deleted a $125 billion pension provider’s entire account including several thousand VMs due to an operator error at Google. Kudos to them for transparency. https://lnkd.in/emyjTj2p
