Meet our amazing graduate, Veronica! Here’s what they had to say about their experience with CIS: “CIS is like a second home to me. It has provided fundamental support for the short time I received it. I just met Ms. Cortez (CIS) during my senior year at Spring Woods High School. Everything I know CIS does to aid students is great. From providing meal boxes and/or clothes to elementary school families, free prom dresses for seniors, to counseling and constant outreach about scholarships. The CIS program has proved to me that I can rely on it to get closer and achieve success and valuable memories.” We are so proud of our graduates and the impact CIS has had on their journey. Congratulations to all, and here’s to many more successes ahead! 🎓✨ #GraduateSpotlight #CISgraduates #StudentSuccess

We celebrate the UN World Youth Skills Day to consider a critical question — how can international schools and universities equip students with the skills they need to excel in their personal, academic, and professional lives? At CIS, we address possible answers through many lenses: - The Broadening Assessment & Skills Working Group from the CIS Summit continues the conversation surrounding large-scale assessments and standardized tests which do not accurately reflect the whole person and don't give universities a good understanding of students' skills. - CIS member schools have shared details of their own programmes to help other institutions recognize students' learning both inside and outside the classroom in our Snapshots of Evolving Assessment series. - Our new Bridging the Gap between Schools and Universities workshop invites international school counsellors, university admissions representatives, and student services professionals to work together and support students' transition from secondary-to-higher education with the practical and social-emotional skills they need. - A recent blog post describes how university guidance counsellors and future pathways advisors can broaden their very definition of 'success' and supports students to gain the skills they need to pursue diverse pathways after graduation. CIS members can visit the Community portal to learn more about these available resources and register for the workshop: https://bit.ly/2J2rlQ8 Read 'Post-secondary pathways: Ways to broaden definitions of success' on the CIS Perspectives blog: https://bit.ly/3Xrrenr

How are we assessing students' potential for academic and employment success? The Broadening Assessment & Skills Recognition working group from the CIS Summit continues to explore alternative assessments for students as they leave secondary schools and apply to universities. Discussions revealed challenges and opportunities as school leaders described how they are developing new ways to portray the competences and skills of their students. Over the next few weeks, we will share snapshot videos of evolving assessment practices from CIS member schools. CIS members can read the comprehensive report to learn more from school and university leaders who are considering broader evidence of achievement amidst the existing systems and structures, and from the leaders of educational organizations that design and assess what is taught in many international schools worldwide. My Job at UoM!✌🏾 When I tell people that I work at The University of Manchester, the common question is, “What do you teach?” Well, I do not teach. I work as an Access, Student Success, and Development Coordinator. Long title, right? Tell me about it! In simple terms, I work within a team that predominantly focuses on the University’s flagship programme for Black heritage students, Manchester 10/10. Our team manages the project, its strategic direction, students participation, and importantly, ensures that it meets the aims of closing the awarding gap - the big elephant in the room! Almost 6 months into my role now, I can’t help but reflect on my experience working at a university. I will describe it as thrilling, eye-opening, and certainly different, having transitioned from being a Student Union trustee and elected officer to working in a large institution like UoM. One thing that has remained constant, though, is the passion of colleagues for diverse representation and student welfare. That’s something I’ve enjoyed the most in my current role - working with a team dedicated to ensuring that our Black students’ voices are heard and well-represented across campus. Our team recently hosted a brilliantly attended student networking event, joined by over 70 undergraduates of Black heritage backgrounds from across the university. Positively, students commented that the event left them feeling “well connected”, “confident”, and “hopeful for the future.” For me, it was gratifying to see the hard work of our team, Team 10/10, pay off. I’m excited to see students developing personal growth, building lifelong friendships, and creating memorable university experiences through our programme – these are interests I’ve been passionate about since my uni days and are now the crux of my job at UoM! #studentsuccess #highereducation #blackstudents #diversityandinclusion

We were so proud to partner with EducationCounsel and the team at Alliance for Learning Innovation (ALI) to lead this work! To better understand the current state of affairs and chart a path forward toward an appropriately sized, inclusive, and equity-centered education R&D infrastructure at the federal, state, and local levels, the Alliance for Learning Innovation (ALI) convened three diverse, nonpartisan task forces over the last year to dig into three critical, urgent priorities: - - Strengthening state and local education R&D infrastructure - Making the education R&D ecosystem more inclusive - Expanding and strengthening the role in education R&D of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Each task force produced a policy brief outlining recommendations for their priority area. Read them here: https://lnkd.in/e5dWnRJa // Federation of American Scientists
