It commemorates June 19, 1865, the day General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, marking the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrating this day each year reminds us of our history and our responsibility to build freedom, equality and healing within all of our communities.
