LET CELEBRATE WORLD FOOD DAY Food Day is an international day celebrated annually around the world on 16 October to commemorate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. The day is dedicated to raising awareness of hunger and malnutrition and promoting sustainable food systems. World Food Day is celebrated in more than 150 countries around the world with many different events and activities. These include educational workshops, farmers' markets, food drives, and community meals. The day is also used to advocate for policies favorable to sustainable agriculture and food security. The theme of World Food Day 2023 is “Leave no one behind”. This theme highlights the importance of ensuring that everyone has access to safe and nutritious food, regardless of their background and circumstances. Here are some ways to celebrate World Food Day:Learn more about hunger and malnutrition in your community and around the world. Support local farmers and food producers by shopping at your local farmers market or CSA (community-supported agriculture). Donate to a food bank or other organization that works to feed the hungry. Advocate for policies that support sustainable agriculture and food security. Host a community meal with friends and family and share stories about your favorite dishes. Religious Significance: Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar. It's called "Shrove" Tuesday because it's a day of preparation (shroving) for the fasting period of Lent. In the past, people would confess their sins and be "shriven" or absolved before Lent began. Historical Roots: The tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday has its roots in the need to use up rich foods like eggs, milk, and sugar before the fasting period of Lent began. These ingredients were traditionally restricted during Lent, so people would use them up in one last feast before the fasting period. Global Celebrations: While Pancake Day is most commonly associated with the UK, it is celebrated in various forms around the world.
