Imagine the sun going slowly down, down, down… and never coming back up. That’s what life is like for so many worldwide who suffer from complications surrounding cataracts. In the US, cataract surgery is commonplace, but around the world, in developing nations like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, thousands can’t picture a future where their sight will return to them. Though their condition is reversible through surgery, they resign themselves to a life without the ability to see.
Through COPILOT Cares, I’ve tried to bring hope to those suffering from debilitating cataracts. Through our “Eye Camps” in South Asia, COPILOT Cares was able to support over 300 cataract surgeries, bringing the gift of sight back to those who thought they would never see their loved ones or a beautiful sunset again.
I can’t express to you how moving it is to be present when bandages are removed and a patient feels their sight has been returned to them. It is a moment of delight that cannot be matched and I carry that with me as I continue to champion this work.
