I very much enjoyed appearing on Jay Nordlinger’s excellent podcast. You can listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/euSttjZQ, and below is Jay’s writeup of our conversation, which also includes a link to the podcast. Jay and I discussed whether the U.S. will experience a reckoning due to our out-of-control national debt, the Republican Party’s bad turn towards populism and economic nationalism, the surprising amount of bipartisan agreement around bad economic policy, and other topics. We also talked about how much the Jesuits and Isaac Asimov influenced me, and how less than two minutes on the subject of the socially optimal amount of pollution got me hooked on economics. Here is Jay’s description, on Ricochet: “Michael R. Strain is an economist at the American Enterprise Institute. Jay talks with him about his upbringing, his education, and how he arrived at his views, which favor economic freedom and freedom generally—the ‘open society.’ What about our federal budget deficit and national debt? Is there bound to be a reckoning? Strain says that there are two kinds of reckoning: a horrendous, destructive bear, suddenly at your door; and termites, eating away at your foundations, day after day. We are in termite territory. Economics may be a ‘dismal science,’ but not in the hands, and in the conversation, of Mike Strain.” cc: National Review, American Enterprise Institute, Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy. https://lnkd.in/e_7cMNPk
