Leading, Following, Learning, Inspiring

Today I attended the retirement of a friend and colleague, Rich Ferris, PLS, GISP. Rich (and his beautiful family who have been along for the journey) has given the majority of his career, 37 years, to Summit County, Colorado. On the same day, another of our friends and colleagues was signing off for the last time down in the City of Durango, Eric Pierson, who has also given 30+ years to public sector. A bit of a further drive that many of us could not swing, but many of us who gathered in Frisco, CO raised a toast in your honor too, Eric. I am in awe of the #dedication , #tenacity , #goodwork , #respect of these individuals. If you have never worked in #publicsector or #localgovernment , that amount of time is a huge, freaking, BIG DEAL. Being in the government is one of the toughest career choices that can be undertaken...but it is also a place where you will meet the great peers/people on the planet, with the biggest hearts and absolutely monster amounts of passion and energy. Of which, these two have in abundance. I congratulate you both on moving in the "land without titles", I think cyclist, dad, grandpop, fisherman, camper and friend are the best and most important titles anyway. Enjoy LIFE! All I could think about on my trip down the mountain tonight is how grateful I am to have crossed paths and stood on the shoulders of so many giants like these two. We will miss you both at our "official" gatherings but will continue to carry on the #localgovernment torch and make sure we find you for the "unofficial" gatherings. Heck, I may have to run for CGAIT Chair and establish an alumni fund...I've heard CGAIT coffers are "flush". If you need a "pick me up" or start to "miss the action", I would be happy to give you the phone numbers of some jurisdictions who will be willing to share how their day/week is going. I'm sure that will help you get over it...quickly. Thank you both for your service, you are appreciated more than you know.

Well said Chris! Congratulations Rich Ferris, PLS, GISP and Eric Pierson on your retirements! Your dedication to public sector IT is incredible and CGAIT won’t be the same without you. Please come back as special guest speakers. Best wishes!
