A huge thank you to Florian CAMPUZAN, CFA for the honor of the invitation. The theme of the presentation is why it is valuable to dedicate more time studying the past than sifting through the noise of the present. One of the case studies will cover the financial events accompanying the COVID-19 pandemic. It opens with one of my favorite graphics which illustrates why our life experience limits our ability to properly contextualize extreme financial events. The graphic shows six major historical events that would have helped investors understand what was happening over the past three and a half years. The X-axis shows how many Americans alive today were at least aged 22 years (rough approximation for the beginning of a financial career) during different events that would have helped them contextualize the COVID-19 financial effects. As the figure indicates, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was nobody alive who met this criterion for the two most important events: the Panic of 1914 and the Post-World War I/Great Influenza inflation. In his book "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order," Ray Dalio laments the absence of historical awareness among investors and government policymakers. I hope that the upcoming discussion at Neoma Business School takes a small step towards addressing this deficiency; and I hope that Investing in U.S. Financial History (see link below) adds a few more steps.
