When I started my hedge fund 12+ years ago, I wrote a list of north-star Principles. Flat managerial structure, Google-like perks, big-name service providers, and more... Almost all of my Principles turned out wrong in the end. I wrote many chapters and wanted to call the book either "The Finance Snake" or "Unprincipled" but decided not to publish it cuz I'm not ready to be sued yet.
But I still want to share these lessons, so I'm doing Hedge Funds 101 on April 25th. https://lu.ma/tkz0ync1
As someone who has attended Christina's previous Hedge Fund 101 calls, they are well worth the admission!
I have to admit, I'm sad to hear your book won't be published (yet). I had been periodically checking Amazon for a while now after visiting your website and learning you were writing it. While I won't hold my breath waiting for its release, I refuse to remove it from my mental Wish List!
CTA: We're looking for people to interview for Quants Worth Following. As a part of Databento's mission, we're interviewing quants from ALL walks of life, in the hopes of shedding light on an industry known for being secretive and competitive. If you (or a buddy) is interested, please DM me. We're open to both entry-level folks and veterans, as both perspectives are incredibly valuable to the community.
This was the best book I've read all year, hands down. This book is helpful for anyone with a stake in the data business today, whether as an operator or as a VC. Chin and Davis validate the unique struggles that every data business faces today. From high barriers to entry, to common misconceptions, to real advice on sales and marketing, this book was both educational and validating!
I'm happy to finally announce the release of my new book, "Data-Minded: An Entrepreneur's Guide to a Data Startup"!
This labor of love is now available to the public. "Data-Minded" is a comprehensive guide for entrepreneurs and business leaders looking to start a data company. From understanding the evolution of data companies to mastering data productization, marketing, and sales, this book provides practical insights and strategies for building successful data-driven businesses.
I'm incredibly grateful for the support and collaboration of my co-author, Lorn Davis. His expertise and insights have been invaluable in shaping this book. A special thanks also goes to Douglas Laney for writing the foreword and lending his authoritative voice to our work.
To everyone who has supported me on this journey, thank you. I hope "Data-Minded" will serve as a valuable resource for those navigating the exciting world of data entrepreneurship.
