According to Baltic Deep Tech Report 2023, which was released two days ago, over the past five years, Baltic Deep Tech startups have attracted over €700 million in investments, constituting 10% of the total venture investments in the region. In 2023 alone, Deeptech startups attracted more than a quarter of all venture investments in the region. This burgeoning ecosystem is drawing in an increasing number of investors from both within and beyond the Baltic region. Latvia's startup ecosystem, our home country, experiencing rapid growth, starting from 2019. A significant portion of investments is being directed towards Deeptech and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This trend is driven by the potential of Deeptech to bring about revolutionary changes to society and the economy. Latvia actively contributes to the development of startups focused on revolutionary solutions in the healthcare sector, which is our primary focus. These startups leverage artificial intelligence to create innovative solutions capable of addressing the most complex challenges. International venture investors are displaying significant interest in these projects. I've worked with many startups as an advisor in a cybersecurity incubator. Too often I've seen tech-oriented founders who are not interested in building a business. They just want to build a product, and expect that the "business part" will just happen. After a few failed pitches you would think they would be receptive to taking a broader view, but many just double down and go back to trying to make the product great. Startup founders: you're building a company not a product. Take a minute to identify the areas you've been neglecting. (That's ok! No-one knows everything.) Anti-patterns in deep tech pitches #3 The hard reality is that for most prospective deep-tech founders, the innovation is unlikely to lead to a venture funded business, and a hard eyed look at business viability, team and potential scale is needed. My third anti-pattern is techno-babble, where the pitch is overwhelmingly taken over by a deep dive into science and technology. Which is not to say that there's not a place for this, and it is crucial to understand, but as an investor I really need the whole story - how does this become a business? who are the customers? what's the business model? competition? etc. And fundamentally, what's been done to reduce the risk on all of those parts.
