We’re celebrating the end of National Nurses Month with a look at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials and how physical space might support changes in the curriculum. Our colleagues, Terin Barrios, AIA, LEED AP and Emma Cuciurean-Zapan, AIA, will publish expanded thoughts about how the Essentials will drive planning and design for renovations and new construction later this summer, but in the meantime, we couldn’t wait to share four early thoughts: 🚑 1. Toward the end of the semester, I like to give students a chance to discuss their experiences as a nursing student. The dialogue is invaluable. It allows me to learn from their experiences and bring back to administration areas of success and areas for improvement opportunities. Here are some of the guidelines to promote a healthy environment for discussion. Feel free to share and use them as well: "This is a safe space to share your experiences as a student." "There is no judgement or retaliation."  "Share ONLY what you are comfortable with." Encourage the students to: Use “I” statements and to speak from their personal experience. Students don’t need to speak for the entire class because even if someone has like mindsets, identities are very complex, and experiences will differ. No experience is invalid. Students can continue to share their experience in private, if you and they more comfortable with that option. #nursingeducation #healthcareconsultant #nursingstudent

Today I led my first 3-hour seminar and hosted my first screening of “Everybody’s Work” a film by SHIFT Nursing. I chose to incorporate this film, #Everybodyswork, into my final assignment for my last Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education course because it explores systemic racism in healthcare and is a call to action: to rectify its harm and promote healing and health justice. This amazing work, produced with the support of RWJF challenges us to ask the important questions about how are we being intentional in diversifying the nursing workforce and encourages us to confront why we must diversify our nursing workforce. As a class we discussed the following: -Implicit bias and stigmatizing language and its impact on healthcare and health outcomes - Discussed and practiced bias interrupting skills -Our shared nursing language -Equity conscious nursing care and doula support services One student shared, “This film centered the value of humanity and connection and recognizing that although we may come from different walks of life, it is imperative that we treat our patients the way we want our patients or family members to be treated is a great compass to give anti-bias care into our practice.” There are so many good discussion points in this film! This was one way of many that I plan to share this powerful information with my community. #MyShiftStartsNow and I encourage you to #StartYourShift because it is #Everbodyswork to help build a #CultureofHealth.

It only took me four years of coursework followed by a summer dedicated to the attached. But here it is: my Masters of Nursing capstone project, advocating for increased utilization of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in family practice in Alberta. TLDR: NP led clinics should be utilized in Alberta like they are in ON, BC, and the US. More appropriate compensation models are needed in Alberta to compensate for value added to family practices by NPs.

Today I had the great privilege of speaking with the incoming Ph.D in Nursing Administration/Education and Health Administration/Education students at William Carey University.
