Complex indeed. That said, pharmacies and pharmacists are a key to unlocking access to critical primary-care services even beyond vaccinations and flu shots. Losing pharmacies, especially those in areas where access to primary care providers are limited, is a very bad sign for our healthcare system. In my opinion, there are three things we need to change to enable these businesses to survive and thrive. First, pharmacists need to be able to practice using the full scope of their training. Regulations must change in order for that to happen broadly. Second, while this does happen to some extent now, pharmacies must be reimbursed for the work they do to care for patients beyond simply fulfilling prescription orders. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, pharmacists must have the time to provide this kind of care. I'm not an expert in pharmacy workflow(s) but it seems to me one good first step is to continue the adoption of time-saving technologies and to drive further technological innovation. Pretty comprehensive article regarding the erosion of pharmacy services in the US. Not noted but also crucial is the disproportionate impact that pharmacy closures are having on communities of color. Unmentioned in the article as well are the pharmaceutical companies themselves that make rebate arrangements with PBMs that increase revenues when drug prices rise. Another uniquely American mess.

Major retailers such as CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Walmart say Narcan, the nasal spray that reverses opioid overdoses, will be available on store shelves in the coming days. Here’s what you need to know: • Narcan is the nasal spray version of naloxone, which reverses the effects of opioids in the brain, restoring slowed or halted breathing. Narcan is not habit-forming — and is safe to use even in someone who has fallen unconscious but who turns out not to be overdosing on an opioid. • Each Narcan pack will contain two spray containers each with a four-milligram dose. Experts say it’s crucial to administer naloxone as quickly as possible. • The over-the-counter packs are expected to sell for about $45, which has led to concerns from public health experts that it is too expensive for regular drug users. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said it is encouraging state Medicaid programs to cover over-the-counter naloxone.
