🌐 Today Europe takes one step closer to improving patient care by making it easier and faster for patients to access and control their health data and for data to be used to drive healthcare innovation. 🏛️ The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have now reached a provisional agreement on the European Health Data Space, a new regulation making it easier to exchange and access health data at EU level. However, with rapid technological advancements, we now have the opportunity to change this. The funding boom in the healthtech space since 2019 has led to the creation of a variety of new innovative technologies and strategies to address the challenges facing the healthcare sector. Despite the flood of new ideas and products not many contenders in the field have managed to create scalable businesses, and the 'oxygen deprived' funding environment is starting to bring this into stark reality. Diversifying sources of revenue seems to an obvious statement, but is hard to do in the digital health space when solutions seek to go deep and specialise in addressing a specific healthcare problem. The question is can solutions be flexible enough that pivots can be done, like Akili has for example in moving from a prescription to D2C approach. Other ideas like pursing a platform play and acting as a go-between for healthcare stakeholders are sound, but again can be tricky in the healthcare space where regulatory, safety and other considerations can make it difficult to set-up an 'AirBnB healthcare' equivalent. One area I do agree on is the healthtech space as been slow diversify its revenue by growing into international markets, which is very different from how quickly companies with physical health products like drug and OTC brands have scaled their operations. In part this is due to a lack of suitable commercial partners (there is only one Peach Health Asia but many drug and medtech commercial partners in Asia). The other is that many digital health company products are not set-up to integrate with partner platforms, which complicates their ability to work with international commercial partners in a viable way. Time will tell if this dynamic will change! This quarter, I have the pleasure of TA'ing MED 213: The Digital Future of Healthcare at Stanford University alongside Justin Norden, MD, MBA, MPhil. Our guiding philosophy is that digital health will impact all aspects of patient care, and all healthcare professionals need to be equipped to manage and think critically about digital health solutions. Last week, we heard from Dr. Nirav R. Shah, the former Chief Operating Officer for Kaiser Permanente in Southern California and former state health commissioner of New York. Key Insights: 💡 Healthcare is slow to embrace innovation, with slow progress in areas like Value-Based Care (VBC), which has been discussed for over 25 years with limited adoption. Moreover, technology has not significantly lowered healthcare costs and the sector struggles with wasteful expenditures (approximately 30-50% of current healthcare expenditures today). 💡 Healthcare is becoming more digital, mobile, and virtual, with an increasing focus on personalized care. The shift to real-time patient-reported outcomes and continuous monitoring (e.g., CGM) is revolutionary; technology can now capture activities of daily living (with mobility as a new vital sign), creating new gold standards for stratifying clinical risk. 💡 Asynchronous healthcare enables exponentially cheaper healthcare; the future of healthcare will likely involve asynchronous, virtual, and automated solutions. Moreover, with care moving into the home at the patient’s convenience, the new hospital of tomorrow may just be an emergency department with an ICU floor above.  💡 Implementing change in healthcare requires careful change management, involving pilot programs, CFO approvals, and a focus on improving quality, lowering costs, and scaling solutions. 💡 Innovation is elegant integration. The reality is that for health systems to innovate, buying and integrating solutions is a more effective (albeit, initially more costly) approach than waiting for legacy systems to evolve. 💡 Healthcare professionals need to stay informed, be irrationally optimistic, and embrace change to address the broken incentives and systems in healthcare. Will Digital health cease to exist? The annual HITLAB Digital Health Summit took place at Columbia University where thought leaders discussed the digital health revolution and guess what? Before your jaw drops, here's the twist – it’s simply going to become so deeply integrated into healthcare that we won't single it out anymore. Seamless integration is the future! 🧩   A major shift is happening – the initial fascination with #AI and large models like #ChatGPT4 is maturing into thoughtful strategic planning. The next step is optimization, comprehensive implementation, and above all, digital equity.    The mantra echoed at the conference. Integration, integration, and more integration. Goodbye point solutions, hello holistic inclusion in the healthcare system. 💥 And let's not forget the potential of #RemotePatientMonitoring when paired with #Telehealth on patient engagement platforms.
