"Happy to help" is one of my favorite phrases. The whole point of leadership is to help the team work effectively towards a shared goal. Leaders shouldn't ever grumble when they help. It demonstrates a lack of care for the people of the team and creates a culture of people who grumble when they help. Leaders should help genuinely and joyfully. I think design leadership in itself is a very difficult phenomenon to grasp as in dealing with others creativity can be jarring at times. Sometimes leadership is hard. Sometimes it's exceptionally easy. However, often times the most difficult part is determining which is which. Leading a team/department that relies on other teams/departments is often like steering through a field with cows. Yes, there's often a path of least resistance, but stepping in a patty or two will most likely happen. As leaders, it's our responsibility to not just guide our team cleanly and efficiently, but to help the other teams deliver what's needed without stepping on their toes or making demands.
