Today is my birthday. I am enjoying the "day off" as I read through the tropes on LinkedIn wherein I am bemused by the onset of how AI will make my life simultaneously a living hell AND a cure for world hunger. Yet I digress... There is a pox upon our industry. It's innocently manifested by well-meaning authors seeking to share their experiences that are then amplified broadly with the world thanks to what I call the "O'Reilly Paradox." Almost exclusively, my ire for this process begins with authors who get a publishing deal with O'Reilly, reflect on their "...years at Google" and inadvertently seed an entire industry with what amounts to marketing "solutions" that don't likely work at 100% of those companies not called Google, aren't products you can buy, but instead represent entire conflagrations of culture, organizational dynamics, technology, investment, skillsets, philosophy, architecture and scale that often aren't implementable elsewhere. There are amazing lessons to be learned, for sure and I enjoy reading them. I love hearing new buzzphrases and approaches and I especially love the influx of marketing emails from companies latching onto the latest term which seeds analysts to likewise scribe enchanted dodecahedrons and sinusodial cycles of despair... However, what happens next is everyone deciding they are now an "SRE" because they read a book and closed a JIRA ticket. What I want to read is how someone who has a team of 5 did the work of 50 without burning out and with a measured approach to solve problems that aren't planet-scale. Because most aren't. "100% of the companies not called Google...are not Google." This post clearly was NOT written by AI.

This is EXACTLY why AI will be an awesome tool, but not in the format we’re hyping today. It’s LLMs as a component for solving some specific set of problems that’s useful, not magical chatbot overlords. If you need another example of exactly what you’re talking about, Kubernetes is literally this exact problem applied to containers.

May your BBQ smolder with pleasant aromas as you enter your next orbital cycle around the burning deathball.

Happy Birthday! Hoping I may make it to your neck of the woods later this year, as I’m going to SuperComputing in Atlanta and may explore that corner of the US a bit.
