This is a wonderful rant from Hoff. I particularly share his perspective on SRE here, since I spend a nontrivial amount of time with clients who have decided they are rebadging their I&O team as "SRE" yet don't actually want to build something based on the SRE principles -- and honestly probably shouldn't. Know what problems you're trying to solve, and do so in ways that are pragmatic for YOUR organization. You don't always need to jump on buzzword bandwagons. #SRE #operations #analystrelations

The majority of companies do not benefit from trying to copy the approach taken by Google, or Netflix, Spotify or others. Why? Complexity, output and resources. The amount of resources in an organization and the technical, logistical or organizational complexity define the amount of effort or struggle factor to get things shipped. The output is measured against the impact on the company. The relative cost of a company the size of Google or Netflix putting engineering muscle behind traffic management (for example) is low and the output of even small changes has a huge output. The complexity of many edge cases are reasonable for them to tackle because the impact of that output generally outweighs the costs of making the change. Is the same scenario true for every piece of software or technical problem which every company encounters? No. There are plenty of legacy, neglected applications inside Google, Netflix et al. They don't talk about them. They talk about the wonderful and audacious elements of their environment. It's a recruiting and sales tactic. It's also cool. You can do the same, but focus on the mechanics of what make your business unique and measure the amount of resources that can be sanely deployed against various technical problems to generate the type of output one of these initiatives produces. It likely isn't the same problem/domain, and that is usually why it's not worth copying what they talk about. The underlying equation is more or less the same, but your objectives are likely very different.

Lesson: Start your day on your terms, not your inbox's.
