IPV describes physical, sexual, or psychological harm or stalking by a current or former spouse or dating partner. It's essential that Navy and Marine Corps members gain understanding of this issue and prepare to support those at risk within our ranks. By recognizing the signs and taking proactive steps, we can help create a safer and more supportive environment for all. Navy Medicine’s Intimate Partner Violence (IPV): Leadership Guide aims to promote leaders’ understanding of IPV by highlighting the prevalence of IPV and the affect it can have on the readiness of service members. Knowing how to respond appropriately and connect those at risk with available resources is essential. I'm incredibly proud of the work we do with Ohio Legal Help. From building the website five years ago to implementing text-to-speech for improved access to legal information this year, the website has a direct impact on people's lives at a moment when they need help. Reading through the report there was a stat that stuck out to this technologist: 70% of the visitors do so on their mobile phones. That's a lot! We've always known the mobile experience was important for this website, it truly embodies "mobile first" graphical and information design. And because the mobile experience is so important, we've done quite a bit of work ensuring that is performant. Capellic implemented enhancements earlier this year to boost the website's performance score for mobile, taking it from 75 to 95 according to Google PageSpeed Insights. Ironically, the JavaScript libraries that provide assistive technologies, including the aforementioned text-to-speech feature, pushed that score back down, but we're still passing Core Web Vitals. The last thing we want is someone in need having a difficult time operating the website due to JavaScript gumming up browser performance. While the General is not wrong, there is more context to consider. At Camp Lejeune in 2015, I was in 2DLAR, and was moved from C Company to the S-2 shop to prepare me for separation from the USMC. I worked with a former MARSOC SSgt. and we ran Facilities for a few months. Now, I'm not a mycologist, but I was tasked with eliminating mold in a barracks. The scenario: A company of Marines was deployed on a MEU, and the air conditioning in their barracks went out. This was summer in North Carolina, so it was a big problem. We had to assemble a group of 20+ Marines to clean each room by scrubbing the floors, walls, inside cabinets, under beds, and throw out all of the bedding. Could this have been prevented? Possibly. Better leadership and initiative could have presented a scenario in which the barracks of deployed Marines were checked more than once a week. At the same time, I cleaned mold almost daily in my own rooms I lived in across my time in the Corps. It was a constant fight. After even just a 5-10 field opp, the mold gets a good foothold. The real issue though? Dilapidated, old, and broken barracks that have been left to crumble as the military points its procurement dollars to other uses. Retention requires good housing. Recruiting requires good housing. Good order and discipline, and pride, require good housing. Don't believe me? Ask your soldiers.
