Hospitals are gearing up for an influx of patients with injuries and burns from fireworks on the cusp of the July 4 holiday. We talked with Erica Hodgman of Johns Hopkins Medicine about the types of injuries that typically appear in emergency departments and the impact on patients and families. "It's really hard to see the impact on the whole family, because there's usually a lot of guilt on the part of the parents, too," she says.

Dasher’s Community Health Worker team here, and we’re popping in again to share some information for Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week. Scary fact, but data shows that about 80% of child restraints/car seats are not properly installed. It’s important to ensure that child restraints are installed properly to reduce the risk of injury, or even death, in the event of a car crash. To learn more about proper car seat installation and to watch a tutorial, visit PennState Health’s resource here: https://lnkd.in/ewE9dvbx #ChildPassengerSafetyAwarenessWeek #ChildSafety #PassengerSafety

We know kids put things up their noses. Children aged two to five are most likely to put an object up their nose - the incidence is slightly higher in boys than girls. Do you know how to perform the 'mother's kiss'? Knowing this tip has saved many parents and caretakers a hospital trip or two. How to perform the 'parent's kiss': ➡️ Relax and reassure the child, telling them you're just going to give them a big kiss. ➡️ Block the nostril that does not have the object in it. ➡️ Put your mouth over their mouth, ensuring there is a good seal. ➡️ Breathe into their mouth and when you feel resistance, give a short, sharp puff of air. "If you can't get it out with the kiss method, you will need to seek medical help," Nurse Sarah Hunstead warned. For more Child Safety resources, visit https://buff.ly/2W9XIBd

Simple steps to stop the falls Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA), are encouraging everyone to take measures to help reduce the risk of falls at home. Falls are the single biggest cause of accidental injuries in the home and 80% of hospital admissions due to accidents among over 65s are a result of a fall. As part of Falls Prevention Awareness Week 2023, ABC Council and PHA are encouraging those aged over 65, to request a free home safety assessment from the Council Home Safety Officer, who will help to identify factors that can lead to increased risk of falls, and what action can be taken to reduce this risk. For more information, or to book a home safety check, contact the Home Safety Officer on 0330 0561 011 or email homesafety@armaghbanbridgecraigavon.gov.uk More details here.. https://lnkd.in/epyQ3dCg
