Here's a topic I've heard lots of conversation about, from those with no direct experience, to frontline workers who work fulltime in addictions and harm reduction. The questions are often how do we address the opioid crisis that Canada faces (and substance addiction in general) while also maintaining public safety? Anecdotally, the feedback I hear is that the safe sites aren't doing anything to solve or even mitigate the issue. Many doctors were unwittingly part of the problem when they were fooled into thinking oral opiods like OxyContin weren’t addictive and bottles of OxyContin began popping up in grandma and grampas medicine cabinet and those of anyone complaining of a bad back in the 1960’s! Many of the teens who easily stole these pills have now gone on to overdose first on heroin and now Fentanyl. Big Pharma is being punished but it’s not their products that are being used to get high anymore it’s coming from China via the border with Mexico carefully concealed in eight wheelers and Boeing 707’s! Well, the widespread distribution of NARCAN the opiod overdose antidote has undoubtedly saved many lives as has the increased but still inadequate access to addiction recovery programs. There are numerous bills in the House many proposals coming from Republican lawmakers but Democrats all the way up to the White House are not really getting behind any of these ideas for improving the impact of the SUPPORT bill. The war in the Ukraine and in Gaza has turned Congress attention away from this massive domestic crisis. The bill from the panel’s Health Subcommittee chair, Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.), also would prohibit states from disenrolling people from Medicaid when they are incarcerated, so their coverage would automatically resume upon release, in an attempt to provide them with health care access at a time when in most states including Rhode Island they’re most vulnerable to dying from an overdose. Efforts to get folks into addiction recovery who need it at the ACI have intensified and researchers at Brown University’s Alpert School of Medicine led by Dr Jody Rich and his colleague have received much deserved praise for their pioneering work but they absolutely depend upon Congress to keep supporting their efforts if progress is to continue. #addictionrecovery #fentanyloverdose #bigpharmaandaddiction #narcan
