One of our customers, a major Chlor-alkali producer, was experiencing continuous liner failures with their lined butterfly valves within their cell effluent process piping. Over time, permeation of the liners caused the valve to lose functionality resulting in unplanned outages and environmental risks. Our team was able to engineer a completely custom valve solution delivering zero permeation related failures. #DiaphragmPump A diaphragm pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses a flexible diaphragm to transfer fluids. It is commonly used to pump liquids, gases, or a combination of both. The diaphragm acts as a barrier between the reciprocating pump mechanism and the fluid being pumped. The basic design of a diaphragm pump consists of an inlet and outlet valve, a reciprocating mechanism, and a flexible diaphragm. When the diaphragm is in the neutral position, the inlet valve opens, allowing fluid to enter the pump chamber. As the reciprocating mechanism moves, it pushes the diaphragm, causing the fluid to be forced out through the outlet valve. Diaphragm pumps are known for their ability to handle a wide range of fluids, including corrosive and abrasive substances. They are often used in industries such as chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, wastewater treatment, and oil and gas. Some common applications of diaphragm pumps include transferring chemicals, filling containers, dosing chemicals, and pumping slurries. There are several advantages to using diaphragm pumps. They offer a high level of efficiency and can generate significant pressure and flow rates. Diaphragm pumps are also self-priming, meaning they can draw fluid into the pump without external assistance. Additionally, the diaphragm acts as a barrier, preventing the fluid from coming into contact with the reciprocating mechanism, which makes them suitable for handling sensitive or hazardous fluids. If you look at the following photos, you may not believe that this corrosion occurred in the lower part of the regeneration column and vapourline of regenerator reboiler of sour gas sweetening unit (chimney tray up to tray no. 2). This will become even more strange when you realize that corrosion factors affecting amine/sour gas corrosion such as HSAS (heat stable amine salts), H2S, CO2,... were also within the acceptable range. Specifications often consider top of regenerator column to be susceptible to corrosion due to possibility of acid gas condensation and for this reason top of columns are cladded with SS. Because lean amine exits the column from the bottom, usually no consideration has been regarded for this section. However, API RP 571-2020, interestingly explains the reason of corrosion in bottom of regenerator column (part 3.2.4): "If excessive regeneration occurs in the reboiler, it can lead to acid gas corrosion in the reboiler, its returned vapourline and the bottom of regenerator." Always monitor operating temperature of reboiler and bottom of the regenerator, as it can be a sign of excessive regeneration. In this case as the trends showed most of time the operating temperature of reboiler and bottom of regenerator for better regeneration was greater than designer's recommended operating temperature. #aminecorrosion #Amineregenerator #reboilercorrosion #regeneratorcorrosion #failureanalysis #corrosionrootcauseanalysis #rca #api571 #corrosion

In a trimethylamine (TMA) plant, the ball valve INTEC K224-S-FS-DE/11/Q1500 is used in the application of dimethylamine at 4 bar and 110°C operating conditions. Dimethylamine (DMA) is an organic chemical compound from the substance group of secondary aliphatic amines. Special features of the ball valves are: ▶ the ball seat spring loading on both sides of the DE design, for the purpose of automatic pressure relief of the dead space on the upstream pressure side (automatic pressure relief when the pressure in the dead space is 2 bar higher than the upstream pressure) ▶ the design with welding ends, which meets the operational requirement for reducing the number of flange connections and potentially limiting emissions Demanding processes require particularly reliable ball valves. #api2000 #thermal #venting #insulation #credit Dear Chemical Engineers, Those of you who have performed normal venting calculations for a storage tank based on API STD 2000 are aware that normal venting has two components: 1. Inbreathing: A result of pump-out or removal of the liquid contents of the tank plus the thermal inbreathing due to changes in ambient temperature around the tank. 2. Outbreathing: A result of pump-in or filling the tank plus the thermal outbreathing due to changes in ambient temperature around the tank. The thermal venting of the tank involves credit for insulation. This has been incorporated in the formulas for thermal venting in API 2000 in Section 3.3.2.3. The most conservative case for sizing of a normal venting device such as a PVRV (Pressure-Vacuum Relief Device) would be to consider a completely uninsulated tank where the insulation factor becomes 1 in the formulas for thermal inbreathing and outbreathing. For a fully insulated tank the insulation factor reduces many fold depending on the insulation thickness, insulation thermal conductivity, and the surface area of the tank covered by insulation thus reducing the thermal venting requirement by a factor of twice to one-tenth. However, there is a cost implication of sizing the PVRV considering a completely uninsulated tank in terms of the increased size of the PVRV. As engineers, we are supposed to use this information judiciously considering that if the tank is insulated we use the appropriate reduction factor to provide and optimum size of the normal venting device of the tank instead of oversizing it based on the consideration of a completely uninsulated tank. The attachment with this post provides the calculation of the reduction factor for partially insulated tanks with a cone roof and also for double-walled tanks. This is part of the complete calculations developed by me for normal venting based on API 2000. Please feel free to share your views and comments. Best Regards, Ankur.

Diaphragm Pump A diaphragm pump is a versatile mechanical device used to move various types of fluids, including liquids and gases. It operates on the principle of reciprocating a flexible diaphragm, typically made of rubber or thermoplastic material, which expands and contracts to create pressure differentials. Diaphragm pumps are renowned for their ability to handle abrasive, viscous, and corrosive substances, making them invaluable in industries like chemical processing, oil and gas, and wastewater treatment. Their seal-less design minimizes the risk of leaks, making them ideal for handling hazardous materials. Diaphragm pumps come in various types, such as air-operated, electric, and hydraulic, each offering unique advantages for specific applications. Our Telegram channel: https://lnkd.in/dEC6nHyP.
