Biofilms can be a serious problem in membrane systems, causing reductions in permeate production and quality and increasing energy consumption. If the problem is acute operators can find that they have to clean on a weekly basis to maintain the system. Sometimes more frequently than that. However, with the application of Kuriverter IK biofilm control agent the period between cleans can be extended to many months. The savings in energy and water can be considerable. This is a very interesting read and again highlights the value of water mist in these situations so as to reduce water runoff. The use of high volume water suppression systems should be avoided so as to limit environmental damage. The use of a superior water additive that reduces the PAH discharge to the atmosphere will also improve environmental outcomes.
