As #Pride Month comes to a close, this new brief from the Center for Health Care Strategies explores critical opportunities to improve health care quality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) community. LGBTQ+ individuals face significant health disparities and inequities due to persistent interpersonal discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, systemic discrimination, and structural barriers. With increasing community pressure and federal and state interest, many policymakers are exploring how to leverage #Medicaid to better address the health needs of LGBTQ+ members. This new brief highlights key considerations for shaping Medicaid policies that aim to enhance health outcomes and quality of care for LGBTQ+ individuals. https://bit.ly/3KZwDL6 Liz Gipson, Courtney Shahan Roman

🌈 Happy Pride Month! 🏠 While significant strides have been made to support those who identify as LGBTQ+, youth are still disproportionately unhoused compared to their heterosexual, cisgender peers. In addition to increased housing insecurity of LGBTQ+ youth, LGBTQ+ adults may face housing discrimination, such as being charged higher rents, being shown fewer units, and getting harassed when trying to seek supportive services. Intersecting identities, such as race and sex, create even greater gaps in housing discrimination. 📌 Public housing authorities (PHAs) have an obligation to promote fair housing and can make a difference in the lives of their residents. By centering equity, PHAs may improve outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals. This Pride Month, let's advocate for equity-based solutions to housing discrimination for LGBTQ+ individuals. #PrideMonth2024 #HAIGroup #HAIGroupResearch #AffordableHousing #PublicHousing #Equity #LGBTQ+ #HousingEquality #FairHousing #EndDiscrimination

More than two decades of research reveal the harsh reality faced by LGBTQ+ youth, especially those who are transgender, non-binary, or gender-fluid. Discrimination at home, in school, and within our communities negatively impacts their mental health. In the past year alone in the United States, discrimination affected 60% of LGBTQ+ youth and 64% of transgender, non-binary, or gender-fluid children. These statistics are heartbreaking, and we must all stand together to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for our youth. 💜🏳️🌈 ➡️https://buff.ly/3qd73vs #NYCAffirmativePsychotherapy #SupportLGBTQIA2SYouth #EndDiscrimination #MentalHealthMatters

As per the findings of the "We Never Give Up the Fight: A Report of the National LGBTQ+ Women's Community Survey," LGBTQ+ women encounter intimate partner violence at elevated rates compared to women in the general population. Shockingly, 47% of respondents disclosed experiences with emotional violence, encompassing behaviors like gaslighting, social control, or family isolation, alongside physical or sexual violence perpetrated by their partners. 🏳️🌈💔 #TheLinQFoundation #BringingCommunitiesTogether #LGBTQWomen #IntimatePartnerViolence #EndViolence

⚠️Multiple studies show that children who identify as LGBTQ+ are more likely to experience online sexual harm. Research published by Thorn last year found that: ➡️LGBTQ+ teens reported a greater reliance on online communities and spaces ➡️LGBTQ+ teens reported higher rates of experiences involving nudes and online sexual interactions ➡️Compared to other teens, cisgender non-hetero male teens reported higher rates of risky encounters and of attempting to handle unsafe situations alone ➡️Young people prefer to turn to offline relationships (caregivers and friends) when they feel unsafe. However, 1 in 3 LGBTQ+ teens would still rather handle a dangerous situation alone than seek help. We have a collective responsibility to raise awareness about the specific risks faced by LGBTQ+ individuals online, to address gaps in the response and create a safer digital environment for all. #EndExploitation #LGBTQ+Rights #DigitalSafety #SafeSpaces #OnlineSafety

Healthcare access is a fundamental right, yet many in the LGBTQ+ community face significant barriers that prevent them from receiving the care they need. These obstacles stem from a combination of social stigma, discrimination, lack of provider knowledge, and systemic inequities, all of which contribute to poorer health outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals. To break down these barriers, it is crucial to promote an inclusive healthcare environment. This involves comprehensive training for healthcare providers on LGBTQ+ issues, implementing anti-discrimination policies, and ensuring insurance coverage for LGBTQ+ specific treatments. Additionally, creating a welcoming and affirming atmosphere in healthcare settings can encourage LGBTQ+ individuals to seek care without fear of judgment. Addressing these barriers is not just about improving individual health outcomes; it's about fostering a society where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, has the opportunity to thrive. #LGBTQHealth #HealthcareForAll #BreakTheBarriers #GenerationalWellness #InclusiveCare #HealthForAll #LGBTQCommunity #BarrierFreeHealth

Today is LGBTQ+ Domestic Violence Awareness day. More than 60% of LGBTQ+ people will experience violence or abuse by an intimate partner or family member in their lifetime. Due to extremely low levels of reporting, victims and survivors remain largely invisible and silent. The theme of LGBTQ+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day is #SeenAndBelieved and is about shedding light on the critical issue of domestic and family violence within LGBTQ+ communities. LGBTQ+ individuals may face additional barriers when seeking support, as well as unique forms of abuse relating to their sexuality and/or gender identity and expression. It’s therefore crucial that we create inclusive spaces where the LGBTQ+ community feel safe and empowered to seek assistance if needed. For more information go to: https://lnkd.in/dZaApN-p
