🏠 November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month! 🌟 Did you know that millions of young people across the country are experiencing homelessness, and it's a crisis that we can't ignore? This month, let's come together to raise awareness, offer support, and work towards a brighter future for these vulnerable youth. 💙 Why it matters: 1️⃣ Homeless youth are at greater risk of exploitation, health issues, and a lack of education and stable living conditions. 2️⃣ We can make a difference through education, advocacy, and support for organizations dedicated to ending youth homelessness. 🤝 Here's what you can do: 1️⃣ Educate yourself and others about the challenges homeless youth face. 2️⃣ Volunteer your time or donate to local shelters and organizations working to support these young individuals. Some local options to consider are The Road Home and the Youth Resource Center run by Volunteers of America Utah. 3️ Share resources and stories to spread awareness and inspire change. Local nonprofit and government agency staff work as a team toward the single goal of reducing homelessness. They know — by name and in real time — all those experiencing homelessness. Our communities are experiencing a crisis of youth and young adult homelessness. But we have evidence that progress is possible. A new report, released by the Office of Homeless Youth and A Way Home WA, shows that focused and sustained partnerships between state and federal agencies, nonprofit partners, and philanthropy have moved the needle on youth homelessness in Washington state. It's clear we have much work left to do, but this report affirms the need to deepen our commitment to this work. Supporting our youth today lays the foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future, enabling them to reach their potential and enrich our communities. https://lnkd.in/gu-b_pBk

Families with children make up nearly 30% of all people experiencing homelessness. On any given night in the US, over 10,000 youth experience unsheltered homelessness, while another 87,960 sleep in shelters. Children who experience homelessness are likely to experience long-term effects on behavioral health, employability, relationships, and brain development, and are far more likely to experience homelessness as adults. Mary's Place works to reduce the trauma of homelessness through prevention-based solutions, a robust youth services program, and partnerships within our community. The 10 yo and I (plus Eddie George, our puppy Go Bucks!) are heading outside in a few minutes for our 3rd annual, Covenant House Illinois National Sleep Out! Trying to make a small difference for homeless youth in our community. The Covenant House Sleep Out is not just an event; it's a call to action. Every year, thousands of young people face the harsh reality of homelessness. Charlie and I believe that no youth should ever have to endure the streets alone. Cheers also to my 1871 colleague Gabby Snedeker who has been participating for many years and longtime friend James Coleman who introduced me to this important organization. By sleeping out for one night, we stand in solidarity with these resilient young people and raise crucial funds to provide shelter, support, and opportunities for a brighter future. It's about more than spending a night outside; it's about creating awareness and tangible change. Why is this cause so important to me as a parent and us as a family? 🌟 Deepening our empathy: Putting ourselves in their shoes for a night fuels our commitment to making a meaningful impact. 🌟 Empowering the next generation: Teaching Charlie the value of empathy, compassion, and activism from a young age. 🌟 Making a real difference: Every dollar raised goes directly toward providing vital services to homeless youth. November 11 through the 18th is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. In Lycoming County (population 113,605) 10.7% of people are in poverty, and a stunning 30% are ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed (see more: https://lnkd.in/eDgQmVQF)). If you combine those numbers, that's 46,238 people in Lycoming County alone. We also serve Sullivan and Tioga Counties, where poverty is at 12.9% and 13.3%, and ALICE reaches 33% and 31%- another 57,887 people. 104,125 people. One hundred and four thousand, one hundred and twenty-five people in just the three counties we serve. Thankfully, we have the generosity of these incredible communities, and in 2022, we were able to donate thousands to our seven partners who help with hunger and homelessness.
