"As Italy’s fashion royalty ages, the era of the all-powerful designer is coming to a close. Armani embodies a generation of designers who wielded broad authority over their fashion houses, from the design studio to the boutique. They are, above all, business owners, calling the shots on corporate governance as well as global expansion. That business model is under siege. Italian designers, no longer in their creative prime, have to navigate a fashion landscape that is now the province of massive conglomerates. Multibrand groups are deploying their financial firepower to penetrate China and other foreign markets. Designers have become hired guns, brought in to rejuvenate a brand and jettisoned once sales sag. It is an approach investors reward. French luxury conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has a market value more than 20 times the size of its closest publicly traded Italian rivals. The smaller scale of Italian brands makes them easy targets. Swiss conglomerate Richemont, which owns Cartier, recently snapped up Italian shoemaker Gianvito Rossi. This summer Kering, the French group that has long owned Gucci, bought a 30% stake in Italian couturier Valentino with an option to buy the entire brand in the next five years."

Simply brilliant. Advertising at its best.
Loewe knows that people have no clue how to say its name 😂 The Spanish fashion house is on a roll with its advertising. After the huge success of last year's campaign that featured Maggie Smith, the brand has now snapped up Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy in a tongue-in-cheek spot that is brilliantly sharp. Its fantastic combination of humor and style has landed it our Ad of the Day: https://lnkd.in/eaxPRz95

Founder & Managing Attorney of LVLUP Legal. Women-owned Business & IP Law Firm for Creators, Startups & Entrepreneurs. Trademarks I Copyrights I Contracts I Investment I Fashion & Luxury. Board Advisor & Female Founder.
Last week the LVLUP Legal team attended the Opening Arguments for the Chanel v. What Goes Around Comes Around trial. Chanel argued that What Goes Around Comes Around knowingly sold counterfeit goods, goods that were not registered with Chanel's system, and have profited off the use of Chanel's trademark and CoCo Chanel's image and likeness. What Goes Around Comes Around argued that that this is about the right of people to sell second hand luxury goods, that no one would confuse What Goes Around Comes Around with a Chanel boutique, and that the "counterfeit" goods were actually manufactured by Chanel but were part of a theft. What are your thoughts on this case - does Chanel's trademarks fall under "fair use", or is What Goes Around Comes Around use of Chanel's trademarks considered infringement? Follow along our LVLUP Legal's commentary with Vogue Business on this case. #lvluplegal #lawyer #fashionlawyer #fashionlawsuit #chanel #whatgoesaroundcomesaround #trialcoverage #attorney #trademark

The Cartier's image problem shows us that even luxury brands are at risk when bad communication policies are applied. Now we all know about the earrings sold for the wrong prince and what's even more harmful for Cartier's image: People are very thoughtful about whether Cartier sent some fake or less quality earrings (In case it happens, it would be very bad since Tiffany's Co. scalpers issues, jewelry verification is more strict). This happened in Mexico, where somebody noticed Cartier sold two earrings for a very cheap price (for about 12 bucks). Law enforcement (Because of PROFECO) requires the business to respect the price shown when somebody buys. It happened before at retail and supermarkets, even for Dell, but it's very noticeable when this happened to a luxury brand which puts on the table the topic about what is fashion, what's worth of being considered fashion, purchasing power and how the company sees their customers in reality.
