I always find it interesting that there is a National Day for literally everything. I am not sure who decides what gets chosen for what day but someone is out there coming up with it all. Well, today is National Unicorn Day! Our team at East Coast Facilities, Inc. have long called ourselves a Unicorn company. Why? It is because of our culture, our business model and our execution. I had an interesting conversation with my friend Hudson Hopper yesterday. It started a bit like this. “If I really wanted to, I COULD go build a multi million dollar company…” So why haven’t I? This was the very question we tried to answer over the next 30 minutes. Here are some of the insights. 1. We often have the ABILITY but not the WILL. - I can do it, but won’t do it, so therefore I can’t do it. 2. A lot of our will (why) comes from survival not ability. - When I first started working with Airrack, I had never produced anything before. I did not necessarily have the ability but it was either sink or swim… and I was not going to sink. My will came from having to “survive” not because I had the ability to start out with. 3. Just because we have the ability to do something doesn’t mean we should. - Yes, I may be able to build that company, but is that the lifestyle I desire to live? Will that pursuit distract me from a greater calling and purpose on my life? Does doing this compromise on things I value and believe in? These are all important questions we must ask ourself. So, WILL I embark on this mission? SHOULD I? Do I truly have the ABILITY? What’s stopping you? Maybe we should all give that nudging thought in the back of our mind a listen and see where it takes us! Comment below something you have the ABILITY to do but not the WILL.
