“You are the most important person that you will meet.” In our professional lives, it's easy to get caught up in the demands of our jobs. But remember, nothing is more important than your health and your family's well-being. Thank you Renee Johnstone for sharing your story. Always advocate for yourself by: 1. Believe in yourself: Your beliefs can shape your reality and may make the impossible possible. 2. Have a support system: Helps with your overall health and happiness. 3. Developing Confidence: Confidence can only manifest if action is taken. It’s developed over time and builds on previous experiences. 4. Initiative and Growth: Repeatedly put yourself in uncomfortable situations or environments to help you build confidence, learn, and improve. 5. Know Yourself: Know your strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes, know you’re deserving of anything just like everyone else, and treat yourself like how you would treat the love of your life. Knowing yourself is also a journey. 6. Value-Based Investing: Invest in what brings you joy and value. 7. Communicate Clearly: Make your needs and boundaries known. 8. Set Boundaries: Designate specific times for work, family and other enriching activities. 9. Prioritize Self-Care: Regularly take time for activities that rejuvenate you. 10. Reflect and Reassess: Periodically evaluate your work environment and its impact on your well-being. 11. Negotiate: Any expense or opportunity can be negotiated. There’s more leverage the more experienced you are. 12. Non-negotiables: These are the things you must have. Think about them and write them down. These design thinking-inspired guidelines can help you establish a work-life balance that supports your personal and professional goals. Here's some brief context As we get older, our lives become busier and more complicated. There's more to do. There's more at stake. There's more to balance. We're always trying to catch up, and sometimes we're simply trying to be a little less far behind. Time becomes a resource to be optimized or efficiently used; checklists serve as our guide. We finish one shift, paper, or project, and move on to the next. After all, there's so much more to be done. Engaging with the potency of Glennon Doyle's words, Life is brutal, but it’s also beautiful. Life is Brutiful, I found resonance within my professional journey. Over four pivotal years, my work terrain hovered around hospital corridors, interacting intimately with children and families where I played myriad roles – friend, mentor, guide, confidante. My prime habitat was the Hematology/Oncology department. I was a Certified Child Life Specialist, my mission was rooted in transforming hospital hardship into healing for children, using a blend of preparation, education, and play. 💭 Sure, a great elevator pitch, but honestly, it doesn't capture the entire truth, it goes much deeper. 🌟 In staring adversity in the eye through my tiny patients, I understood that pain and beauty can co-exist. How so, you ask? 1⃣ Every wide-eyed kid clinging to hope taught me resilience. 2⃣ Each family huddled together in prayer illustrated unity. 3⃣ The ever-ready hospital staff, clocking in additional hours just to ensure round-the-clock care, demonstrated selfless service. My prediction? This phenomenon will extend beyond the boundaries of pediatric wards to permeate larger pockets of healthcare institutions. We are on track to reshape and redefine the healthcare experience, breaking through the traditional, transactional model. Remember, hospitals aren't just about healing, they encompass human suffering and joys, fear and courage - all the shades of life that make it brutal yet beautiful – brutiful. In a recent conversation with a client, she said the best part of her day was counting down the days until retirement. She said she wasn't enjoying her work and she knows the only thing that will make it better is to retire. She regrets giving all the years of training for a position, that she doesn't enjoy. While this sounds really sad......as we talked further, there were actually lots of things about her work that she LIKED! She loves the patients, the science of it all, and the fact that she makes a great living for herself. This kind of thinking is NOT uncommon! We tend to focus on the things that are wrong, not as we expected, or difficult to change. This can feel overwhelming and exhausting; making work seem impossible! I am taking a short break from clinical work and am celebrating my decision. From the moment I chose the path of rheumatology, I knew I had embarked on a journey not just of medical practice, but of personal connection and emotional fulfillment. There's a unique joy in being able to bring a smile to my patients' faces, in knowing that, in some way, I've made their lives a bit easier, a bit better. This has never been about accolades or gratitude for me; it's always been about striving to be the best version of myself for those under my care. To be a source of strength, comfort, and healing for them. Yet, I find myself in a contemplative space lately, reflecting on the path I’ve walked and the road ahead. The nature of healthcare, with its inherent pressures and demands, has, of late, left me feeling somewhat disillusioned. The very essence of our work means we are often caught in a whirlwind of activities, leaving little room to pursue passions outside of work or to simply breathe and take a moment for ourselves. While the gratitude of those we help is not the fuel that drives us, it is disheartening on days when despite our best efforts, outcomes are not as we hope, or when interactions are less than kind. These moments of adversity do have their toll, subtly eroding the spirit and enthusiasm that once felt inexhaustible. Although I am surrounded by supportive colleagues and a generally positive work environment, there comes a time when one must pause and take emotional stock. It’s in these moments of introspection that we find our truest strength and perhaps, the clarity to make difficult decisions. I have decided to take a step back, to bow out temporarily from the hustle of daily responsibilities at work. This is not a goodbye to my profession or my passion but a short hiatus for self-renewal. It is a time I intend to use to reconnect with my personal passions, to restore my mental and emotional equilibrium, and to return with even greater resolve and dedication to my practice and my patients. To my colleagues, my patients, and the wider healthcare community, I extend my deepest gratitude for your understanding and support. This is a journey we are all on together, each of us navigating our own challenges, but united in our commitment to health and healing. I do not know Will but after learning of his death I felt compelled to share my thoughts. I hope these words will be part of a movement that dismantles toxic systemic issues. They are for those near and dear to me- you know who you are. ❤️ _____________________ I am both encouraged and concerned for everyone I know who are in various stages of medical training- from taking MCATs to the application cycle to medical school to residency. I have witnessed these amazing individuals jump through so many hoops and apply an insane amount of pressure on themselves only to enter into a totally BROKEN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. A system they are definitely more than deserving of to be part of and one that does not deserve them. A system that has created an environment and culture that lacks TRUST, TIME, and ACCESSIBILITY but is focused on patient satisfaction scores and reimbursement under the guise to improve quality of care. A system that has centered MONEY over people. A system focused on sickness rather than wellness. We are actively witnessing people killing themselves for this system, in the grossest sense of the word. I remain hopeful that we are seeing some positive changes and those who I know will be a part of this change. But why should they have to be??? https://lnkd.in/e2hRx-9h
