During #BlackHistoryMonth, Shuntae Richardson, M.P.A., quality supports specialist for the McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership at National Louis University, is already looking ahead to this year’s Juneteenth holiday in June. Richardson suggests that early educators start brainstorming ideas to mark the day in their classrooms or programs, and makes some suggestions to help you prepare to create an enriching Juneteenth celebration, including: >>Visit an African American Museum. >>Meet with staff before and after the visit to discuss what you learned, what you felt, and how you might be able to engage with children and families in gaining a better understanding of Black History. >>Discuss what you have learned or didn’t learn about Juneteenth. >>Create an environment during Juneteenth that allows children to learn while having fun. >>Engage in cultural activities that can help staff and families learn from one another. This day marks a pivotal moment in American history when, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free—two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth reminds us of the importance of continuous learning and empathy. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲? November is a special time when we come together to honor the rich tapestry of Native American heritage, culture, and contributions. As we mark National Native American Heritage Month, let's take a moment to celebrate and recognize the profound impact Native American communities have had on our nation's history and identity. National Native American Heritage Month also serves as a reminder of the challenges many Native American communities face today. As we celebrate their history, let's not forget to support initiatives that address issues like healthcare, education, and the promotion of cultural preservation. Here are some ways to get involved and show your support: - Explore Native American literature, art, and music. - Learn about the history and heritage of Native American tribes. - Attend local events and celebrations to immerse yourself in their culture. - Support Native American-owned businesses. - Get involved with organizations working to uplift Native American communities. Let's make this month a time of learning, appreciation, and solidarity. Join us in celebrating National Native American Heritage Month, and together, we can contribute to a more inclusive and equitable future. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #UNICO
